Alachua County seeks input for Safe Streets and Roads for All Action Plan
Press release from Alachua County
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Nov. 13, Alachua County, in collaboration with the City of Gainesville and the University of Florida, will host a community workshop to address pressing concerns about street safety, as well as bike and pedestrian infrastructure planning. The workshop will be held at the Harn Museum Auditorium (3259 Hull Road, Gainesville) from 4 to 6 p.m.
The plan will introduce the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Action Plan and the Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan, two major initiatives aimed at making streets safer for all residents.
The event comes in response to recent fatal crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists, prompting Alachua County to declare a traffic violence crisis, and represents a key opportunity for residents to share their experiences and contribute to a vision for safer streets across the county.
The SS4A Plan seeks to identify and address the systemic issues contributing to these incidents, with a focus on policy improvements and actionable projects to reduce risks for all road users.
In addition, the Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan will present the first significant update to Alachua County’s bike and pedestrian master planning in over 20 years, aiming to expand and enhance no-motorized networks to support safe, accessible travel for residents who walk or bike.
“The development of these plans couldn’t come at a more critical time,” said Transportation Planning Manager Alison Moss. “Together, these plans will serve as complementary roadmaps to improve the safety and comfort of everyone navigating Alachua County, whether on foot, by bike, or in a vehicle. Community input is essential to the success of these plans, and we encourage residents to be part of this important initiative.”

The roads are crap and the AC BOCC wants to spend millions on bicycle paths! I don’t pay the outrageous property taxes to build bicycle lanes and paths!
Make the roads safer by pouring taxpayer money into repair of roads that really need them!
Show the bicyclists (and scooter operators), and pedestrians, a video of what happens when they don’t follow the rules of the road! Remind them they are not “superhuman!”
Another circle jerk meeting.
Cite the distracted drivers. They’re easy to spot at intersections – they’ve got more than a car length between cars and they stop 10 ft in front of the stop bar. Easy enough to spot distracted cyclists and pedestrians, most aren’t capable of doing two things at once.
I thought we’ve had this discussion before.
In other words, this will make the streets into not streets, because the control freaks hate cars (for utterly irrational reasons).
They’ve already gotten rid of merging lanes, and tried for roundabouts, and lowered speed limits for no good reason.
If they actually cared about making streets safer, they’d pass a law making it illegal to use your phone in your car for anything other than GPS/map directions, and illegal to hold it in your hand.
Than allow the police departments and courts to keep 100% of the fines.
But that would actually go a long way to fixing real problems in traffic, and it would give the PD and courts money.
Fixing problems means the continuous money and ability to control freak on people goes away.
Streets are like guns. It’s not the object, it’s the people using them that’s the problem. As more illegal drivers use the streets, more innocent residents will be harmed.
Only lawyers benefited from the current situation.
ACLUSPLCDNC 👹👺👿🤡💩
Enforce the road laws on the books an most of the problems are taken care of
Alachua county needs someone to tell them that they put the pedestrian crossings on NW 8th ave in the DARK?! The street lights are spaced so far apart the in between sections are so dark and they put the crosswalk between the street lights where no one can see the pedestrian, it doesn’t take an engineering degree, although there are PLENTY of those around this town.

‘Master Plan’? Based on who’s running this $hitshow? I seriously doubt it.
Fix the damn roads!
There are only a few things one can do. ONE: get the electric bikes OFF side walks. And, IF they ARE on sidewalks or bike lanes, ticket them if they are going against the traffic. When one approaches a turn (often out of a neighborhood) one always looks left first (nearest threat) and also, because of obstructions, often have to get way out to see…..I can’t tell you how many times someone has been going 20 mph (or more….I don’t know) on the sidewalk, against traffic. How many have been hit so far?
“Safe Roads for All”? Potholes and crumbling pavement are unsafe. Start there.
I am so tired of them always talking about bike lanes and paths and the same roads are still terrible after 16 years since I moved here. How about we make all people over the age of 16 register and license their bikes and THEN they can take that money and pay for bike paths. These taxes are from people who need to get to work and back everyday.
The reality is that they only want woke citizens at the meeting who will agree with them. As someone who used to ride his bicycle to work, I would NEVER ride in the bike lanes, because I saw too many drivers drifting into that lane and looking down into their laps (EVEN WHILE TURNING), presumably at phones. It’s already illegal in Florida to hold a phone while driving, and it is a primary offense, but the police have more than enough violence to keep them busy around here.
1st put back all the no U-turns it makes traffic crazy at intersections. The cutting through parking lots or going around intersection to avoid the red lights. People on bikes think they are invincible and have a safe bubble around them, growing up in the 70s and 80s rideing bikes was our responsibility to protect ourselves! Stop creating an atmosphere that puts them in danger as these crosswalks make them think a bike has no responsibility to look first as they just go for it. I stop and the car next to me runs through, and the car behind me about rear ends me. This has caused more harm than good. And fix the damn roads!
One more thing that’s unsafe: when you’re making a left turn and panhandlers block the view of oncoming traffic.
