Alachua County seeks proposals for Gun Violence Prevention grant initiative

Press release from Alachua County

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – The Alachua County Commission has declared gun violence a public health crisis and is seeking proposals from non-governmental, grassroots organizations and emerging small businesses to provide programs and services addressing known risk and protective factors associated with gun violence.

Common risk factors associated with gun violence include substance use, perceived and actual inequalities in how someone is treated, exposure to violence, gang affiliation, access to guns, and many others.

Protective factors that can prevent or reduce the prevalence of gun violence include our concern for others, developing work and family aspirations, and adult social supports, among other factors.

Funding awards are limited to a maximum of $10,000.00 for each proposal, with a total of $50,000.00 awarded under this program. All funds must be expended before Sept. 30, 2025.

Those wanting to apply should visit the OpenGov website and review all of the relevant material. When ready to apply, go to the Project Documents tab and click on item 9 (Submittals).

All applications must be completed and submitted electronically via OpenGov by midnight on Dec. 11, 2024. No late proposals will be accepted. Proposals that do not meet the grant criteria will be rejected. Application rules and instructions, including the complete Request for Applications (RFA) document, are available on the site. Interested vendors are encouraged to read all related documents before beginning an application.

An optional information session will be held for interested agencies. The session will cover the application process, using the application site, and tips for a successful proposal. The voluntary pre-application meeting is on Nov. 25 at 9 a.m. at Alachua County Community Support Services Conference Room A (218 SE 24 St., Gainesville). Participants can also use Microsoft Teams (Meeting ID: 261 055 472 939 Passcode: gv98NQ).

  • “Protective factors that can prevent or reduce the prevalence of gun violence include our concern for others, developing work and family aspirations, and adult social supports, among other factors.”

AC BOCC forgot the part about locking up the criminals using firearms for crimes and keeping them in jail! That’s very effective!

Make crime illegal in Alachua County!

I’ll take my $10,000 and donate it to victims of domestic abuse!

    • Lockem up and Throw Away the Key, I totally agree with you. AC BOCC tend to keep themselves distracted with peripheral issues instead of getting to the root of the problem. It’s like they just want the grant money instead of solving the problem.

  • I’ll offer a pretty sharp knife for those repeat offenders. I’m confident they won’t be pulling anymore triggers.

  • “Common risk factors associated with gun violence include substance use, perceived and actual inequalities in how someone is treated, exposure to violence, gang affiliation, access to guns, and many others.”

That pretty much provides an excuse, or at least provides a reason to blame anyone and everyone for an individual’s conscious decision.
Wouldn’t expect anything else from a progressive liberal society.

  • Just automatic 5 years if felon caught with gun and 10, 20, life.

Put that on side of RTS buses .

    Case solved.

    Free, no charge!

  • _____tavious ain’t buying guns. Lock your car doors idiots. Most if not all of these guns are stolen and passed around daily.

  • Exposure to violence starts when these kids are still in their strollers. Baby daddy get pissed cause they ain’t no money left on da EBT card to buy drugs & alcohol.
So he beat the s#@% outta da baby mamma, hence the child hears and sees violence at its lowest level.
Politicians, there is a good place to start!

  • Scam. Laughable. No such thing as “gun violence.” Made up “thing” to obfuscate the truth.

  • Convicted felons carrying a firearm can be sentenced to many years in jail. We need to start doing this again.

  • $$$Money can’t buy you love$$$ and a gun violence grant certainly won’t solve the criminals with guns problem. Unless of course you keep them in jail and away from the rest of us. That is expensive and why they keep letting them out. Need more jails and mandatory sentencing for violent criminals.

  • Again– why the focus on GUN violence? Shouldn’t we be addressing the root causes of violence instead of obsessing about which tool abusers use?

  • Idea work $10,000:

Put up signs in appropriate parts of town that say:

“Yo, homeboys. No cool to busta cap on yo homeboys.
If you had not dropped out of school, you could read this sign”
