Alachua County selected for Housing Supply Accelerator Program

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Alachua County has been selected as one of 16 communities nationwide to participate in the Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge.

The Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge, launched by the National League of Cities (NLC) and the American Planning Association (APA), is designed to accelerate implementation of proven and innovative housing strategies that expand access to housing across the country.

The program helps communities tackle local housing challenges by identifying solutions to expand, preserve, and improve the quantity and quality of housing.

Participating communities will take part in virtual and peer learning opportunities, receive tailored technical assistance, access best practices and tools, and connect with housing supply experts. They will also receive national recognition from NLC and APA.

“Alachua County is committed to ensuring that residents have access to safe, affordable, and high-quality housing,” said Alachua County Commission Chair Charles Chestnut IV. “This program will give us more tools and strategies to expand our housing options.”

Rooted in action and results, the challenge supports local leaders in putting the Housing Supply Accelerator Playbook: Solutions, Systems, Partnerships into practice.

Other communities selected to participate in the challenge include Champaign, Illinois; Clifton Forge, Virginia; Cottonwood, Arizona; Cranston, Rhode Island; Dover, New Hampshire; Evanston, Illinois; Greensboro, North Carolina; Lebanon, New Hampshire; Greater Lowell, Massachusetts Region (Northern Middlesex Council of Governments); Marquette County, Michigan; Plattsburgh, New York; Romulus, Michigan; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Sterling Heights, Michigan; and Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

  • I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. This county makes the dumbest decisions and the people are drinking the Kool-Aid! This will turn this county into a Banana Republic!

  • Good start, but will they be owner-occupied with HOA rules, or more Airbnb party houses, or worse more section 8 crime breeder camps? Let’s hope our elected leaders know the differences.

    On the other cities chosen, it’s baffling why they picked some in Illinois etc that are losing residents, why is that? It smells of Blue city corruption… hope I’m wrong…

  • Why-o-why would we want more development of any kind in Alachua county? More housing means more people. ‘Affordable’ housing means more stress on the tax base. The ancient infrastructure is already in trouble.

    • A major new development would pay for new infrastructure, like Plum Creek offered to the eastside and Hawthorne (but the county preferred more section 8s and subsidized businesses).

  • We will build more ticky-tack. More time will be spent sitting and talking about spending money. Maybe we will get more statues and parks and ceremonies celebrating this paltry little town government. Lets have another ribbon cutting. This will be a shameful waste of money. This cannot be free folks. We will pay. Beyond the embarrassment of our government feeding into this show off plan, we will pay.
