Alachua County to host second SS4A and Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan meeting

Press release from Alachua County
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Alachua County, in collaboration with the City of Gainesville and the University of Florida, will host a community workshop to address pressing concerns about street safety and bike and pedestrian infrastructure planning. The workshop will be held on May 20, 2025, at the Thomas Center (302 NE 6th Ave., Gainesville) from 4 to 6 p.m.
The meeting will present the current status of the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Action Plan and the Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan, two major initiatives aimed at making streets safer for all residents. This is the second of three public meetings planned for these initiatives.
The SS4A Plan seeks to identify and address the systemic issues contributing to these incidents, focusing on policy improvements and actionable projects to reduce risks for all road users. This meeting will present a draft high-injury network for Alachua County and potential safety countermeasures developed in response to the traffic violence crisis declared by Alachua County.
In addition, the Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan presents the first significant update to Alachua County’s bike and pedestrian master planning in over 20 years, aiming to expand and enhance non-motorized networks to support safe, accessible travel for residents who walk or bike. A draft bicycle and pedestrian network will be shared for public input, based on feedback received at the first outreach meeting held on Nov. 13, 2024, data analysis, and collaboration with key stakeholders throughout the county.

I hope this isn’t the same group that did the redesign on NW 8th Ave. If it is, they should call it a Master@bate meeting.
They’re just circle jerking with tax dollars anyway.
Fix the damn roads and make them safer, more efficient and less restrictive. Stop punishing people who don’t ride a bicycle.
Put more cops on the street, and people drive safer. It’s that simple. No one who bicycles even wants the separated bike lanes. UF experimented with that near Turlington Hall a long time ago and quickly abandoned the idea. 8th Avenue looks really stupid now. Bicyclist aren’t retarded people in wheelchairs, or whatever they think.
The first step that needs to be taken in regards to bicycle safety is to have them ride on left, facing traffic. This would help them from getting hit from behind without any warning and allow for evasive action by the bike rider. Traffic enforcement is sorely needed for both riders and walkers, with widely reported tickets and fines for miscreants. When violations have no consequences, it encourages more unsafe actions.
That’s an idiotic suggestion. You obviously aren’t a bicyclist.
