Alachua man sentenced to a year in jail for 2018 traffic homicide

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tyler Patrick Hughey, 25, of Alachua, has been sentenced to 364 days in the Alachua County Jail, followed by five years of probation, after entering a plea of nolo contendere to leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury.

In June 2021, Hughey was charged with vehicular homicide in the death of Paola Detarso-Palmo on June 6, 2018. Yesterday he pled to a lesser charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury in exchange for a year in jail and five years of probation. The maximum sentence for the charge is 15 years in state prison. Hughey paid $7,500 in restitution to the estate of the victim as part of the plea deal; he will also be required to serve 120 hours of community service at a trauma center or hospital and attend a victim impact panel or advanced driver improvement course, along with a three-year suspension of his driver’s license. Judge Phillip Pena accepted the plea, and Darla Whistler was the prosecutor on the case.

  • Shame Shame Shame. How is the victim? is the victim
in a nursing home able to walk live a normal life or wheelchair bound for life?

  • Well, that’s disappointing. He deserved much, much more time than that.

  • These abysmal homicide sentences say that a person’s life is meaningless. It’s disgusting.

  • Killed someone and fled the scene in 2018. Nearly impossible he wasn’t drunk or high. It took 5 years to get a sentence of a measly 364 days. Remember folks, it’s a legal system, not a justice system.

  • Tsss THESE THUGS SEEM TO ALWAYS GET A SLAP ON THE WRIST!!! HIS FAMILY HAS TO BE RICH!!! AND I WONT SAY THE OTHER REASON BUT “WE” KNOW WHY IT WAS ONLY A YEAR SENTENCE! 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

    • Read about the rest of the people charged in this sight and how charges were just dropped! Don’t assume it’s because he is white. The judge is going woke easy. It’s pathetic.

  • I knew him personally and he was always a terrible person. Bully, player, and he never took anything seriously. This sentence is a joke. He killed someone and only gets a slap on the wrist? There’s people that do a lot less and get so much more time. This is really sad. I’m sorry for the victims family

  • Looks like Whistler blew that one off. 364 days for killing someone. Only in Gainesville folk, only in Gainesville. Disgusting.

  • Wow 1 year in prison for killing a human, and then leaving the seen of accident, hit & run. I see a two tear system in Gainesville Fl

    • And, he claimed there was another driver in his vehicle, but he didn’t know who had been driving. The police report was against him and “John Doe”, the unknown driver. So, he also lied about whether or not he was driving (he obviously was) Total dirt bag

  • It’s 364 days only so he would be able to do the time in county jail and not go to prison!
