Are you seeing annoying pop-ups on Alachua Chronicle?
BY JENNIFER CABRERA
We are receiving a handful of reports from readers who see pop-up ads like the one above, almost always on iPhones. According to our hosting provider, these are caused by adware in the Safari browser on the device; the ads can also appear on Android.
The latest security update for the iPhone (16.6.1), followed by powering down and restarting the phone after the update may also temporarily fix the problem. However, this particular round of this is very persistent, and you may need to read Alachua Chronicle on a different device until Apple fixes the problem. The Brave browser, which can be downloaded from the App Store, does not have the pop-up problem.
Another option is to install the Newsbreak app on your phone and search for Alachua Chronicle under “Sources.” All of our articles appear on Newsbreak.
Malwarebytes recommends taking the following steps on an iPhone. This article explains how to clear the Chrome cache on Android.
Open the Settings app on the iPhone
Tap Safari
Scroll down to “Clear History and Website Data”
Tap “Clear History and Website Data,” then tap “Clear History and Data” to clear your cache and browsing history.
Malwarebytes also suggests restarting your iPhone, keeping it updated, and being cautious about suspicious apps and websites. The issue may recur, and the solution is to repeat the above process.
Another option is to use an alternate browser, such as Brave. Alternate browsers can be downloaded from the App Store on the phone.
If you see the pop-up on a different device or browser, you can contact us here.
Thank you, Jennifer.
