ASO announces death of doctor jailed on child pornography charges

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 7:23 a.m., staff from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Department of the Jail contacted the Combined Communications Center to request emergency medical services for a 40-year-old male who was found unresponsive in his cell.

Just prior to the activation of emergency services, Detention Officers were conducting a morning cell inspection when the male in custody was found unresponsive in bed within a cell where he was housed alone. Detention Officers immediately activated a “Code Blue,” summoning both Detention and Medical resources to assist with life-saving efforts. These efforts included CPR, as well as the use of an AED.

At 7:31 a.m., Emergency Medical Personnel arrived on scene and took over life-saving efforts. The efforts of Detention Officers, Jail Medical Staff, and Emergency Medical Personnel were unsuccessful. At 7:42 a.m., the male was pronounced deceased.

The male in custody has been identified as Chintan Shah. His next of kin has been notified.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was called to the scene to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation. This is standard procedure for any death that occurs inside the Department of the Jail and will run parallel to an internal investigation conducted by the Office of Professional Standards.
