ASO issues warnings in new school speed zone camera locations

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On April 24, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) began a 30-day warning period for new school zone speed cameras at Wiles Elementary School and Chiles Elementary School, and 440 violations were recorded on the first day.

ASO says that the goal of the warning period is education and awareness, so drivers can adjust their behavior. Beginning on May 24, vehicles traveling at 11+ mph over the posted speed limit when the school zone is active will receive a $100.00 fine, with the notice of violation being sent through the mail. Drivers traveling 15 mph or more over the posted speed limit while school is in session, but the school zone is not active, will receive a warning during the warning period or a notice of violation after the warning period has ended.

The cameras are on SW 24th Avenue (one each in the eastbound and westbound directions) and on SW 75th Street (one each in the northbound and southbound directions).

  • What the heck… They said they were going to start the program at 2 schools on the other side of town. Are they going to activate their money generating programs at every school? I don’t recall one incident of a pedestrian getting hurt at around a school zone – ugh.

  • Points?
Can they put a cannabis detector up as well? People shouldn’t have to breathe other people’s illegal habits and last I checked, children aren’t permitted to smoke.

  • I hope everyone remembers who controls the backend of all of these surveillance systems that our dopey local governments are deploying in the name of public safety. And you NPC’s wonder why so many data centers are being erected nationwide….it ain’t for your ChatGPT queries. Don’t let a digital prison be built around you!

Dear God, please wake more people up and fast!

  • Why 11 mph OVER the limit? Why not 3-4? 440 letters is not going to go over too well with the Haile soccer moms! Lol
