ASO: Report of an armed subject at hospital stemmed from a misunderstanding

Staff report from Alachua County Sheriff’s Office social media post

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Alachua County Sheriff’s Office has announced that a report of an armed subject at HCA Florida North Florida Hospital stemmed from a misunderstanding by a staff member.

According to a social media post, there is no active threat, and everyone is safe.

Earlier today, the Combined Communications Center received a report that an armed subject may have been seen on one of the hospital floors, prompting staff in the area to shelter in place.

Believing there could be an active threat, ASO deputies responded to support Gainesville Police officers in conducting a coordinated and immediate response.

As deputies and officers cleared hallways and stairwells, it was determined that the initial report was inaccurate and stemmed from a misunderstanding by a staff member.

The area in question was thoroughly cleared, and law enforcement confirmed there was never an active threat.

  • I was a patient at shands a few years ago when some idiot nurse or tech called the cops saying there was a guy with a gun on the floor. Cops flooded in, turned out the guy was only holding a cell phone. Major disruption to the serenity of my recovery.

  • are there even any donut shops near there, must have been so hard on the cops to respond to a fake stressful situation and not be able to binge eat afterwards

  • Was it a misunderstanding by hospital staff or 911 staff? Same thing happened in Ocala too.
