ASO SWAT team member shoots and kills armed suspect in Hamilton County

Staff report

HAMILTON COUNTY, Fla. – According to a Facebook post from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team member shot and killed an armed suspect today while assisting other law enforcement agencies.

On Thursday, May 9, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) to serve a domestic violence injunction and an Ex Parte Risk Protection Order. The suspect, Joseph A. Ogle (4/10/1965), had declared that he was a sovereign citizen, and he was also a veteran with training and experience working with minor explosives and firearms. It was also confirmed that Ogle had numerous rifles and handguns and had fortified his residence.

As the investigation progressed, probable cause for criminal charges was established, and an arrest warrant was obtained for Written or Electronic Threats to Kill, do Bodily Injury or Conduct a Mass Shooting or Act of Terrorism with no bond.

This morning, deputies from ASO and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office surrounded the suspect’s home. Contact was established, and he refused to come outside. After lengthy negotiations, the suspect started firing at law enforcement personnel and their assets. He told law enforcement he would continue shooting and would commit suicide if necessary. During the subsequent standoff, the suspect presented himself armed with a handgun. At approximately 10:45 a.m., the suspect was shot by a member of ASO’s SWAT team and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following ASO’s policies on officer-involved shootings, the investigation into the events and timelines leading to it will be conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The ASO Office of Professional Standards will investigate whether ASO policies were followed. The deputy(s) involved were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the parallel investigations.

Hamilton County Sheriff J. Harrell Reid stated, “I would like to thank Sheriff Emery Gainey of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff T.K. Waters of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for their support and resources during this incident.”

ASO and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will not be releasing any more information about the shooting and this incident until the completion of the parallel investigations with FDLE and the 3rd Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

  • Guess that sovereignty didn’t work out exactly as planned.
The deputy can rest easy, he did what was needed to protect the public from idiots like him.
Saved some tax expenses as well…win, win.

  • Claim sovereign citizenry and you’ll be scalped eventually…even if it is a legitimate claim. Just ask the natives. Sovereign citizens are not acceptable under our current system of incorporated governments. Even if you are peaceful and never leave your property…it will not be accepted and you will be terminated. 3 sheriffs offices seem extreme for one guy…although it does make a media splash.

(no idea about this particular case – he may have truly been terroristic or perhaps he was just a pissed off veteran sick of the state of things – maybe the details in the warrant will shed light because this initial info is glaringly bare)

    • Probably not a good idea to comment when so little information is available. Give the system time to work before making wild ass guesses.

      • Not a “wild guess.”

“After lengthy negotiations, the suspect started firing at law enforcement personnel and their assets. He told law enforcement he would continue shooting and would commit suicide if necessary. During the subsequent standoff, the suspect presented himself armed with a handgun.”

Upset with the method or the outcome? I for one wouldn’t like the idea that knucklehead was free to do as he pleased and had the knowledge and methods to do it. If he would have acted out in anger in a church, school, or theater, people wouldn’t be questioning the methods but rather asking why he was walking around free.

But hey, if it turns out LEOs didn’t perform professionally and lawfully, I’ll be one of the first to offer condolences.

      • My point about sovereign citizens not being tolerated for hundreds of years is still valid.

I obviously didn’t take a stance with this particular issue. I even stated that.

      • After reading comments from ‘Rogers Corner’ for over a year it is painfully obvious that he represents LEO’s in some capacity. He’s probably the union PR b!tch.

    • Sounds like slice needs another slice of information from the article.

They needed to serve a domestic violence injunction (so hes got history of being a domestic abuser) and ex pare risk protection order (needed to seize his guns because he cant possess guns anymore due to either the domestic violence injunction or being mentally unfit or both)

Here’s another slice of speculative information, he made some dangerous threats that he shouldn’t have so they cops got an arrest warrant for him because well…..he broke the law rather than being a law abiding citizen.

Cops were enforcing the law giving him lawful commands to exit peacefully. He decided to do the opposite, he thought maybe shooting at the cops was a better plan, he came out armed, cops shot back, I guess the SWAT trains more than he does with guns, good guys win, bad guy loses, now there is one less domestic abuser around.

There are no sovereign citizens. There are just American citizens, illegals, and people allowed to temporarily be here. All of whom must obey our laws.

      • “There are no sovereign citizens. There are just American citizens, illegals, and people allowed to temporarily be here. All of whom must obey our laws.“

There are millions of sovereign citizens here. From poor to rich. Natives and diplomats to just name two groups. One group used to run the country and the other one does now. Yes, elitist families use diplomatic passports….don’t be naïve and believe everyone lives as you do

(Again, nothing to do with this particular case – I’m just bringing up a valid point that’s related and for some reason it’s triggering a certain group)

        • There is NO SUCH THING as a sovereign citizen.

It’s a completely pretend thing. It’s like me saying, “I am the king of the United States” and giving myself powers and funds because I decided that I was the king.

It’s not real. It’s, also, usually harmless. But some of these people are dangerous, like this guy.

    • BUT.. what if there was a mental disorder? Where were the social workers, they keep talking about, to intervene in such situations?

  • At least no law enforcement or innocent people were hurt or killed. Only the guy who decided that it would be best to start shooting at law enforcement resulted in a dose of lead poisoning. The information provided is vague and I’m sure more will come out as the story and investigation progress.

  • My guess is, if he opened his door, and said “I’m coming out, I don’t have any guns” my guess is that he would have been shot on the spot. He knew, one way or another that he was going to go down.

    • Wow.

13% of the population commits 50% of the murders in this country. Do you want to make any broad sweeping generalizations about that group of people?

    • That is the single most dumb thing by I’ve heard this year. If that was the case the budget for ammo would have to be more. How many times have you dealt with law enforcement and not been shot?

  • Sounds like this may have been suicide by cop.

Very sad – I feel bad for this veteran who lost his way, and for the officers who felt they had no other choice but to shoot him in response to his threats and actions.

I wonder what sort of a toll these situations must take on LEOs. I am thankful for those who are willing to face dangerous situations, over and over again, to protect the rest of us.

    • Marie, you can’t fix what the county and city commission have done here when they continue to make the dumb decisions. It’s
