GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Richard Fredrick Torrey, III, 35, was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with grand theft after allegedly stealing 26 Lego sets with a value of $1,001.68 from the Walmart in Butler Plaza.
Torrey reportedly went to the store at about 4:00 p.m. yesterday with reusable shopping bags, then placed 26 Lego sets in the bags and walked out without paying. The Loss Prevention Officer at the store called law enforcement, and a Gainesville Police Department officer stopped Torrey at the exit.
Post Miranda, Torrey reportedly admitted taking the Lego sets but said he did not intend to steal them.
Torrey has been charged with grand theft over $750, and Judge Walter Green signed the order releasing him on his own recognizance. Torrey has out-of-county and out-of-state criminal histories.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
They’re testing the waters, seeing if they can walk out with whole shopping carts full of stuff like they are able to do in California and Oregon. So far that’s a big NO. Next they’ll try robbing houses and committing other crimes. Maybe you’ll find someone living in a tent in your front yard who refuses to leave.
Good thing florida has a SYG law
Talk about a block head.
I guess the Self Checkout is too complicated for country folk to understand.
Specially when you got no money.
He looks like he reeks of onions and cheese and salami. And cigarettes.
I suspect he just reeks, period.
