Buchholz High School clinches North Florida Science Bowl title for eighth straight year
Press release from Alachua County Public Schools
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the eighth year in a row, a team from Buchholz High School has won the North Florida Science Bowl. The victory at the regional competition means that Buchholz will once again be competing in the prestigious National Science Bowl® (NSB) competition, which will be held this spring in Washington, D.C.
Organized annually by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, the National Science Bowl® was established in 1991. Participating students demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving abilities in a variety of science- and math-related topics.
This year’s winning team includes James Jiang, Emmanuel Zhang, Laurie Wang, Michael Wei, and Luke Xue. The team is coached by BHS teacher Marc Moody, who praised the dedication and teamwork of the students.
“They have been preparing for several years, specializing in one or two STEM topics each and trusting their teammates to provide support on other topics,” said Moody. “Our weekly practices and continuous evaluation of the team’s dynamics have been key to their success.”
The team is now preparing for the national finals of the NSB, and Moody says the students are looking forward to representing North Florida and to continuing their string of successes.
“Their dominant run at the regional event makes me believe that they can go far at nationals like their predecessors,” he said. “I am crazy proud of their work ethic and their leadership. This recent victory offers just a tiny peek at all they have produced and accomplished in their time on the Buchholz Science Team.”
Congrats!
There’s something oddly peculiar about that group of overachieving students…just can’t put my finger on it.
True! They worked together towards a common goal and succeeded. It wasn’t against the law and they didn’t get arrested. Can’t help but wonder about the down votes.
None of them are morbidly obese
Congrats to the whole team and coach!! It’s amazing what a dichotomy we have in our schools between the kids that work hard and have a solid support system at home and those whose parents use the school system as a baby sitter and free food source….
So nice to see young students doing great things.
We need more good stories like this.
Hard work pays off!
I’m glad to see Buchholz doing so well. It was an excellent school when my son graduated from there in 1986 and it has continued it’s tradition of excellence. Keep up the good work!
Why can’t Buchholz method of success not copied by more Alachua County schools?
