Buchholz math team wins 16th state championship

Press release from Alachua County Public Schools

ORLANDO, Fla. – For the sixteenth time in 19 years, the Buchholz High School math team has won the statewide Mu Alpha Theta Competition and will be headed to the national competition in July.

Buchholz students returned home from this weekend’s competition in Orlando with 231 total awards, including 22 team and individual first-place awards. That included first-place wins in all four divisions of the competition (calculus, pre-calculus, Algebra 2/geometry, and statistics).

Competing teams earn points based on the results of a wide variety of categories. Buchholz earned a total of 7,444 points, decisively beating perennial rival American Heritage Broward, which earned 7,133 points.

The Buchholz team narrowly lost the state contest in 2023, but coach Will Frazer says the returning members were determined to fix that this time around.

“The work ethic and seriousness with which they approached this year’s championship was amazing,” he said. “This win is on my short list of all-time best victories.

Eastside High and Gainesville High also had teams at the competition. GHS came in 16th overall, while Eastside was 19th.

Frazer says the Buchholz team members will now rest and recharge their batteries for a few weeks before they begin their preparations for the national competition in Las Vegas in July. The team will be defending its 2023 national championship.
