Casteel: Open letter to Bryan Eastman

Letter to the editor

An open letter to Gainesville City Commissioner Bryan Eastman:

What I find interesting is that you complain about Ed Bielarski speaking on social media and radio, while you spend plenty of time yourself making TikToks, posting online, and engaging in political commentary from City Hall. Apparently that’s acceptable when you do it, but not when someone disagrees with you.

Let’s also remember some history. When Ed served as General Manager under the City Commission, he worked for the Commission. Like any employee, he had to follow the direction given to him or face termination. Eventually, when he voiced concerns and refused certain actions, he was shown the door. Then came the 2022 state audit, 18 findings, and JLAC’s criticism of the City Commission’s management. That history didn’t appear out of thin air.

As for the claim that employees are fleeing because of Ed, that’s not what I’ve heard. I’ve gotten to know many GRU employees over the years, and I’ve yet to hear one say they regret his return. In fact, I remember a time when employees were far more concerned about speaking publicly or even being seen talking to certain people. That’s how a lot of information came to light in the first place.

You criticize Ed for speaking during the day, but every employee is entitled to breaks. What he chooses to do during those breaks is his business. Meanwhile, you spend a considerable amount of your own time on social media and political messaging.

And let’s talk about the “75% rejected this model” claim. That vote was held only within the city limits, even though many GRU customers live outside the city and had no vote at all. So portraying that as 75% of all GRU customers rejecting the Authority is simply inaccurate. Many voters who participated aren’t even GRU customers, while many customers had no voice.

You also dismiss Ed’s comments about Gainesville being a breeding ground for socialist ideas. Looking at the policies promoted by some local activists, nonprofits, and political leaders, many people would argue he isn’t far off. That’s a matter of opinion, but pretending those ideas don’t exist doesn’t make them disappear.

At the end of the day, the real questions remain: How did GRU accumulate nearly $2 billion in debt? Why did the Legislature intervene? Why did the Auditor General issue 18 findings? Why did JLAC hold hearings? Those things happened because of years of decisions made under City Commission control.

Those are facts, not culture wars.

  • Truth hurts but only when you’re revealed for being nothing but a party hack. So is the city commission nonpartisan? No. What party are they? Starting to get really hard to tell. Don’t New York our Gainesville! And stop whining all over the internet. Get to work, you’re about 15 million over budget right now.

  • Bryan Eastman is the definition of a slimy partisan politician. No matter your political stance I think we can all agree on this. He represents party and bureaucracy over actual needs of tax paying citizens. His smugness is unbecoming.

    • I totally agree. He’s a disgrace to the city commission but so is the rest of them. I’m just glad Ed does not have to answer to them anymore and he can run GRU the right way and they cannot get money out of it anymore.

  • Don’t expect a response from that idiot. He’s the epitome of hypocrisy with his ‘rules for thee, not for me’ attitude.
I keep hoping one of his homeless friends follow him home, but seeing as how he’s more of a coward than man that’s unlikely to happen.

  • And by the way Eastman, we all know that you want Crabbe on the Commission because he will be your “yes man.”

    • Does Crabbe still write for the Gainesville Sun?

The Sun was the GNV CC’s propaganda machine…

It’s as bad as the Alligator with its commi editorials…

is the Sun still around? I just read the AC.

  • I’m thankful to live in a country where everyone can express their opinion, regardless of whether I agree or disagree.

That said, I find it interesting, to say the least, that despite the negative criticism of Eastman, he will be unopposed in the upcoming election.

“Get off the sidelines and get in the game.”

    • Perfect proof that individual thought is completely dead in the progressive block of voters. One could wrap any idiot in a progressive banner and get the exact same results — and effects — on the city. The herd is so well-trained they’ll just line up and follow the lead sheep to slaughter because that’s all they’ve ever been told to do.

  • Ed is a great man who I know and like. However, He is disregarding fundamental mandates tolerated by an under staffed “Authority”. He is a poor PR front man and has an Ed First agenda. Massive hidden SLA losses and no IRP bode poorly for the post Ed era. There has been an electric rate increase and debt reduction will soon be zero. Ed misrepresents basic facts all the time and always has.

  • A review of agenda backup for the upcoming GRU Authority meeting discloses the City Commission is continuing to escalate its lawsuits against GRU despite the passage of state legislation preexempting any changes to the State. How much of taxpayer funds is the City spending on this? Why does the commission continue to waste our very limited resources this way? Certainly if you asked most anyone there are far greater needs. Based on his social media posts I’m sure lying Brian is behind this.
