City Beautification Board to honor area businesses, organizations

Press release from the City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The City Beautification Board – a City of Gainesville advisory board – will recognize area businesses and organizations for their commitment to enhancing Gainesville’s urban environment at the 2024 Gainesville Beautiful Award Ceremony.

When: 6 p.m. on Mon., May 20

Where: The Historic Thomas Center, 302 NE 6th Ave.

Each year, the board honors businesses and organizations working to making Gainesville more beautiful. Award recipients are selected in the following categories: Dining, Public Art, Adaptive Re-Use, Outdoor Recreation, Institutional, and an Overall Winner.

The board works to address the environmental and aesthetic concerns of the community by promoting and encouraging stewardship; improvement and maintenance of community assets; coordinated planning and supportive beautification programs; and excellence in design.

  • The median garden on SW 13th near Shands is overgrowing its boundaries. Not only do they impair visibility, now they have actually grown out into the travel lanes. At least they took out some of the cacti– someone must have pointed out the danger they present to the many scooter riders in the area.

Seems to me that “beautification” should always take a back seat to functionality and safety.
