Press release from City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, City offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.
Residential curbside collection for garbage, recycling and yard waste will not be picked up on that day, and will delayed by one day for the rest of the week.
RTS will run its holiday bus service between 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on routes 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 13, 15, 16, 20, 26, 35, 43, 75 and 711. Please visit www.Go-RTS.com for up-to-date route information. Please plan accordingly.
This holiday has particular significance for our cites, count, and the state of Florida. Before Selma and CR Acts of 1964 and 1965, This town – like all the south – was a Jim Crow racist place where blacks couldn’t eat at the main restaurants, stay in the motels, or go to “white ” schools. Yeah, right here in “liberal” Gainesville, which was compared to Lake City but the blacks wouldn’t have experienced it.
I was here. It happened, had been that way for a long time, before which it was even worse, and thanks to King and LBJ – who pushed through the CR Acts – for changing Gainesville and America forever.
