City of Gainesville hosts Wear Orange event for gun-violence awareness

Press release from City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville will join communities across the country to raise awareness about gun violence with an official “Wear Orange” event this Friday, June 7, National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

When: 7:30-midnight, Friday, June 7

Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center, 1028 NE 14th St.

The event is free and open to the public. Neighbors are invited to wear orange clothing and to sign up and join the efforts to end gun violence.

The evening’s activities include Teen Midnight Basketball, a tournament for area middle and high school students, as well as a special event for Gainesville Fire Rescue’s (GFR) incoming class of firefighters and their families.

During GFR’s third annual Signing Day Ceremony, each of the 15 candidates will accept a conditional letter of employment from the City of Gainesville as they’re surrounded by family and friends, similar to signing ceremonies for athletes committing to sports teams.

Following the ceremony, several candidates will assist with Teen Midnight Basketball. As part of IMPACT GNV, the City of Gainesville and its community partners work to positively engage area youth in fun and safe activities as part of gun violence prevention efforts.

Teens will receive either orange/black or black/orange t-shirts for the tournament. For more information, contact Brittany Coleman at ColemanBJ@GainesvilleFL.gov.

Note: At the start of the evening session of the June 6 Gainesville City Commission meeting, Mayor Harvey Ward will designate June 7, 2024, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Gainesville to honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors.

#WearOrange is the official hashtag of the Wear Orange national movement to stop gun violence. June is Gun Violence Awareness Month.

  • Here’s a suggestion: stop with the criminal justice reform and low and free to walk when you commit a crime! Guns don’t kill, people do. Less than .015% of law abiding citizens commit a crime with a gun. Ffs.

  • “Awareness” isn’t the problem. The thugs and gangs are the problem.

Rid the city of those and the problem will go away.

  • Nope, the criminals need to actually be punished. They made the choice to hurt other people and property. Law abiding citizens with guns are not the problem.

  • Wear orange? As in the color hunter’s wear out in the woods? Nice, make yourself a target for the 13 year old and up little thugs in training! Get a clue!

The thug hunters aren’t wearing orange!

Put them in jail and keep them there! Better yet, execute them if they commit gun related crimes! We don’t need more gun control, these criminals “steal” guns, they don’t buy them in a legitimate store!

  • This is so stupid…Let the guys in jail & prison wear orange jumpsuits!

  • Free campaign exposure for those running a re-election bid.
Instead of a warm & fuzzy buy back, why not actually address the pink elephant in the room.
Useless idea. Commission does not want to offend the voting public.
Until, I repeat until the voters get fed-up with the violent crime in G’ville nothing is going to change.

  • Trying to Brain wash IDIOT’S, like throwing good MONEY after bad MONEY.

  • “City of Gainesville hosts Wear Orange event for gun-violence awareness”

Wow! Such a bold step from a bunch of snowflakes. I’m sure the thugs with guns will wear orange too….that is….if you catch them and keep them locked up.

  • Or, wear pink hats, to remind the populace of ever-sensitive pesence of pink bodily tissues. No bodily tissues are rainbow colored, as far as I’m aware.
