City of Gainesville invites residents to 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The City of Gainesville is observing the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks with a ceremony in remembrance of those who lost their lives as a result of the acts of terror on Sept. 11, 2001.

When: Thursday, Sept. 11, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Where: City Hall Plaza, 200 E. University Avenue

A joint honor guard from Gainesville Fire Rescue and the Gainesville Police Department will open the event. On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, community leaders ask neighbors to honor the victims of the attacks by observing the day with acts of kindness, generosity, and service.

A moment of silence is scheduled at 8:46 a.m. (ET), the moment when the first airplane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. A second moment of silence will follow at 9:03 a.m. (ET) when the second aircraft struck the South Tower. In unity with ceremonies across the nation, leaders ask houses of worship to toll their bells at these times.

The ceremony is free and open to the public and will be livestreamed on the City’s Facebook page.
