City of Gainesville to assess transaction fees for payments by debit and credit cards

Press release from the City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Beginning Aug. 1, 2025, the City of Gainesville will begin passing along transaction fees of 2.45% (with a $1 minimum) to customers who pay online by credit or debit card when making certain payments.

Assessed card-based transactions made online include:

  • Building and planning permits
  • Business taxes
  • Domestic partnership registrations
  • Gainesville Police Department background checks
  • Parking tickets
  • Public records charges
  • Regional Transit System (RTS) mobile bus passes, including Gator Aider
  • Special event permits
  • Towing company and vehicle-for-hire franchise fees
  • Trespass towing contract fees

Beginning Oct. 1, 2025, the transaction fee also will apply to debit or credit card payments made in person at City government offices.

Exempt from new processing fees:

  • Online payments by electronic check (using bank routing and account numbers)
  • Payments by physical check
  • Cash payments where accepted
  • Ironwood Golf Course charges and fees
  • Parking fees via the PassportParking® app, the Passport website, or any downtown pay station
  • Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Department charges

  • It’s important to increase costs for residents rather than cutting non essential services out of the budget 🙄

    • Yes we can thank our city manager for that. I guess this is why they need control back of GRU! “Return GRU to the people” you mean the city crooks!!!!

      • They take cash “where accepted”.
So much for “good for all debts public & private”. Cash should be accepted everywhere.

    • They should be happy to get payment. Why don’t they collect the fee at the golf course? That should be shut down.

  • Wait until Visa and MC get even more greedy and raise the transaction ‘fee’ to 5 or 6 percent or more!

  • Used to be common stories about people who paid large bills in pennies to protest such silliness…
