City of Gainesville to break ground on police property and evidence building on April 24

Press release from the City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – City of Gainesville officials invite area neighbors to a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Property and Evidence Building.
When: 10 a.m. Friday, April 24
Where: GPD campus, 545 NW Eighth Avenue
A new three-story, 24,112-square-foot facility will be built to accommodate the growing volume of GPD property and evidence. The facility, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027, will support organized storage, efficient processing, and easy retrieval of evidence critical to investigations and prosecutions.
In December 2025, the Gainesville City Commission approved funding for the $19 million project through a bank loan secured by the Streets, Stations & Strong Foundations (SSSF) Surtax Program.

$20 million for city police evidence warehouse. Every new city or county building project costs 8 digits now.
Being an irresponsible government, they don’t even have the funds to pay for the already ridiculous price so they’ve taken the liberty to finance this (with undisclosed loan terms) by putting up the SSSF surtax revenue stream as collateral. Including interest this police warehouse will probably cost taxpayers $33 million. Yay!
Doesn’t the city already own warehouse space out at the Airport ? Or maybe use the City Hall Building as it seems useless.
What was wrong with the old evidence building, it wasn’t pretty enough? $19 million is a lot of money..
Don’t worry Bull…..those city commissioners know how to get all the funds they need…..from our pockets.
