City to hold groundbreaking ceremony at Tom Petty Park on April 4

Press release from City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The City of Gainesville’s Wild Spaces & Public Places Department, along with the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, invites you to a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate upcoming improvements at Tom Petty Park.

Planned improvements include the addition of eight dedicated pickleball courts, new seating areas, parking lot lighting, and a pedestrian entrance from the NE 16th Avenue crosswalk. The project will also re-route the existing multi-purpose trail to enhance ADA accessibility, renovate and enlarge the restrooms, and improve the landscaping and stormwater management on-site.

WHEN: Friday, April 4, at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Tom Petty Park, 501 NE 16th Ave., west of the tennis courts

      • Safety first!

What I don’t see is a commitment to full time Police presence here.

As long as I can carry and protect myself in the park!

Just need to carry more rounds!

  • “I won’t back down.”–Tom Petty
“I may re-adjust my stance if you have a convincing argument.”–Tom Reasonable

  • What a waste of public money. Pickleball courts? Why invest anymore money in something that continues to spur lawsuits?

  • I’m still mad ’cause they tore down Dub’s with the mural of Petty on the wall. Loved Petty and the Heartbreakers back in the day, still love their music now.

  • I heard from sources that a teenager from the Eastside of Town already “broke ground” and did donuts in the field right next to the pickleball courts. Now that field is destroyed. All those taxpayer dollars just to be destroyed in such a short matter of time. I hope these troubled teens can get their act together and we can clean up Gainesville’s streets.

  • Are there any restrooms planned for the back area of the park, near the shelter and swings/play area?
    It’s much needed.
    Thank you!
