College Football legend Steve Spurrier is taking on a new title: Head Beer Coach
Press release from Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille and Visors Rooftop
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Known as the Head Ball Coach, College Football legend Steve Spurrier is taking on a new title, Head Beer Coach.
Steve Spurrier partnered with Gainesville’s popular First Magnitude Brewing Company to design 1966 American Lager, a beer that stands out in a crowded field of challengers, much like the visored coach did for 36 years on the sidelines. Coach Spurrier helped create this one-of-a-kind crisp lager that is refreshing in all kinds of weather. Brewed by Gators, for Gators, but tasty enough to please any beer drinker, no matter who they root for on Saturdays.
The 1966 American Lager pays tribute to the year University of Florida Quarterback Steve Spurrier won the school’s first Heisman Trophy. His 40-yard field goal to beat the visiting Auburn Tigers began the legend of the kid from East Tennessee who would become the most revered name in Florida football history.
Now the man who hoisted more SEC titles than he had home losses in the Swamp introduces his next championship trophy–this time, one that is a 16-oz can.
“I am super excited to get this opportunity to share this lager with the Gator Nation. The folks over at First Magnitude were great to work with, and I think we came up with one of the best-tasting beers that you can get,” says Spurrier.
“Working with Coach Spurrier is a dream come true for me and the other UF alumni at First Magnitude,” says Christine Denny, co-founder and President of First Magnitude. “That we got a really great tasting beer out of it makes the whole thing even better. We’re proud of the product and looking forward to creating more great brews with Coach in the future.”
With the cans arriving at Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the start of the 2022 football season, expect to see a lot of Gator fans enjoying the beer during the games. The cans will be available at most in-stadium concessions, as well as the Champions Club and the Touchdown Terrace.
You’ll also be able to catch one of these at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille and Visors Rooftop, the Celebration Pointe restaurant and museum opened by Coach Spurrier in August of 2021, and at First Magnitude in downtown Gainesville. By 2023, 1966 will be available at stores and supermarkets in and around Gainesville, before distribution widens to cover the whole state, just like the HBC’s recruiting during the ‘90s.
Probably $12 at the game all the other beer available at the stadium is $12 which is awesome that we have a variety of beverage choices! On that note though Fresh Squeeze Lemonade is still the most refreshing drink & a bargain at $6 for a 32oz Cup!! Go Gators!!!!
