Convicted felon arrested for fatal hit-and-run on SW 34th Street last night

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Clovis Dieudonnie McNair, 36, was arrested this morning after Gainesville Police Department officers identified him as the driver who hit a scooter last night in the 300 block of SW 34th Street. The male driver of the scooter succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

At about 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, GPD officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run with a male victim on the ground and a BMW that fled the scene, dragging a scooter. Witnesses provided descriptions of the BMW, the driver, and a possible tag number.

According to a release from GPD, officers responded within four minutes and found the victim in the roadway. He was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The initial investigation found that a silver BMW traveling at a high rate of speed had rear-ended the scooter; the scooter was lodged under the BMW and dragged to the 3400 block of W. University Avenue, where it was later found.

Officers quickly determined the address of the suspect and reportedly found the BMW there. Officers arrived at the residence at 10:47 p.m. and attempted to contact anyone inside via loudspeaker announcements. At the same time, detectives requested and obtained a search warrant and an arrest warrant with a $500,000 bond for McNair.

Several of GPD’s Special Response Groups responded, including the Negotiations Response Team (NRT) and SWAT team; NRT tried several times to call McNair.

At about 5:30 a.m., McNair spoke to SWAT team members through a window and agreed to surrender. A few minutes later, a woman came out of the home, followed by McNair, and McNair was arrested.

McNair has nine felony convictions (none violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (none violent); almost all are for drug charges. He served a state prison sentence for selling cocaine and was released in 2014.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • God bless and RIP unidentified male. Rot in prison McNair.

What kind of animal leaves a fellow human to die like this!?

  • The police should NOT have to baby these people like this. So they show up to McNair’s house and have to wait for 7 hours for him to come out?!? They should have given him 15 minutes. No come out? Pump in tear gas. 15 more minutes- still won’t come out? Send in the SWAT and if McNair gets shot, then he gets shot. I do not approve of the way that our police department is babying these criminals of late.

    • You can’t “pump in tear gas” if there’s innocent people in the home. What if there was an infant in there? Should that infant be tear gassed because they so happen to live with a criminal?

    • Yeah, he just killed someone and fled the scene. And the cops have other crimes to try to prevent and prosecute instead of chilling there all night. At least bust the door open and see what happens. If we had a helicopter, flying it over the house for an extended time might have made him hurry up a little. His fancy lib neighbors must be beside themselves. “It just doesn’t make sense! How can this be! We were SOOOO welcoming!”

  • Can’t just be normal and remain on the scene. These idiots have to flee and hide. Then, after they get found out, they make a production out of it. Good luck to the family of the decedent getting blood out of this turnip.

  • He was probably high on wacky tobacky drinking on da hennessy jamming out to his fellow role model Kodak Black riding around in his moms silver BMW with no insurance. Mommy can’t save you now buddy. Rott in HELL you POS

  • Just think how much faster GPD could’ve responded if they had more officers. Another sad day in Gainesville. Maybe Cynthia Curry, in her infinite wisdom of law enforcement can turn this around. Don’t hold your breath.

  • He’s a COWARD. His face should be posted on billboards around town showing his fine and imprisonment for a fatal hit and run.
Mr BIG driving his BMW like a Hollywood thug.
Burn in hell you sorry a** killer.

  • Put the prior judges and public lawyers in jail too! The victim’s family should SUE the hell out of the courts for repeatedly endangering the public, so this happens 🤡👹💩🍦🍦🍦🍦ACLU

  • I know this beautiful person who was on the scooter. This guy need

  • My daughter was great friends with the student who was on the scooter. I cannot tell you how bad this hurts. For this felon to take the life of such a wonderful human when he should have been behind bars is beyond comprehension.

  • Who was driving the vehicle? Just bc it’s in someone’s name, does it mean they were driving it at the time of the crime?

    • “ Witnesses provided descriptions of the BMW, the driver, and a possible tag number. “ This sentence appears in the second paragraph of this article Bernice. Pay attention
