Cornell qualifies by petition to run for re-election

Press release from Ken Cornell Campaign
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Alachua County Commission Chair Ken Cornell has qualified for the 2026 county commission race by citizen petition. This was made possible by hundreds of registered voters across Alachua County who signed their names in support of putting him on the ballot. Cornell chose the petition path over the traditional qualifying fee as a way to connect directly with neighbors and families he’s served since 2014.
The petition method requires candidates to gather signatures from registered voters equal to one percent of the total votes cast in the last election for that office. For Cornell’s at-large countywide seat, that meant 1,634 signatures — a goal reached through months of in-person outreach, made possible only by the generosity and trust of Alachua County residents from every walk of life.
“I am so deeply grateful to every single person who took a moment out of their day to sign a petition. They didn’t have to do that; they chose to. That kind of trust from your neighbors is something you never take for granted.”
— Ken Cornell, Alachua County Commission Chair
Cornell, a Democrat and the current chair of the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, is seeking re-election to the District 4 seat. Throughout his tenure, he has worked alongside residents, community organizations, and county staff to deliver investments in infrastructure, rural land preservation, affordable housing, and responsible fiscal stewardship.
A trained and active Certified Public Accountant, Cornell has applied that discipline and accountability to the county’s finances throughout his time in office. Under his leadership, Alachua County has maintained strong reserves, expanded essential services, and made long-term infrastructure investments without placing an unsustainable burden on taxpayers.
The 2026 Alachua County Commission race is a countywide at-large election. Candidate qualifying week runs from June 8 through June 12, 2026. The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2026. The general election is on Nov. 3, 2026.

1,634 uninformed, pliable voters. That’s 1,634 people who are going to determine how the other ~288,366 people have to live and what their taxes get spent on.
That’s sad…really, really sad.
You are confused on how elections work. There are two ways to get on the ballot: write a check, or do the work to get signatures. Ken did the work to get signatures. These 1,634 people do not determine any of the items you mentioned.
There is an election that follows that is determined by the majority of votes cast.
What does a person have to do to drive a county vehicle to South Florida, get in an accident, come back and get a promotion? That confuses me.
Nice pivot. I’m sorry that you don’t like being corrected. Your comment showed that you clearly don’t understand basic civics. People who sign a petition, don’t determine who wins an election.
I don’t mind being corrected at all. Lil Kenny has done quite a bit of political maneuvering to retain his seat on the dais.
In Alachua County it’s clearly those ill-informed, naive voters who aren’t capable of seeing where their tax dollars are being spent who continue their errant ways.
Now answer my question.
Ah, another pivot. Your arguments are intellectually weak. “Lil Kenny”? A lazy mind resorts to insults. And rather than just admitting your initial comment was inane, you now pivot and whine about it being the “naive voters” fault. It’s like playing whack-a-mole.
And your continued evasion of the question is very telling.
That sounds like you have something to hide. What have you been whacking?
Just when you thought Kenny might put some money back in the till, he decides, nah, we (the people) don’t need no stinking money. How we gonna buy all those emptying ACSB hotels, I mean schools, Kenny?
He even admits to wasting our money. Notice nothing about fixing the roads.
His official claim, “Throughout his tenure, he has worked alongside residents, community organizations, and county staff to deliver investments in infrastructure, rural land preservation, affordable housing, {spending and wasting money} and responsible fiscal stewardship {making it goes to HIS pet programs, not what the citizens want}.
The idiot can’t have it both ways.
His accountant (dis)abilities have not contributed to the success of our county. Another loose cannon in control. Wake up people!!
Once again, democrats bob their heads.
☹️😒😞
Don’t they have term limits ?
I bet he had thousands of call-ins from the free county jail phone program thanking him for his tireless commitment to harassing victims of domestic battery and sexual assault.
“For Cornell’s at-large countywide seat, that meant 1,634 signatures — a goal reached through months of in-person outreach, made possible only by the generosity and trust of Alachua County residents from every walk of life.”
This is the Ken Cornell who attempted to rig the election by redrawing the county district maps in his favor, should the courts reject his effort to overturn voter-approved single-member districts. It seems the residents trust Ken, but he does not trust the residents.
So, you oppose redistricting with political motivation? Does your opposition apply to redistricting at the state level?
