Corrections Officer charged with raping minor at apartment complex pool

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Cody Daniel Lord, 24, was arrested early this morning and charged with seven counts of sexual battery on a minor, kidnapping, and child abuse after allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl at the pool at Forest View Apartments (formerly The Pavilion on 62nd, 1000 SW 62nd Blvd).

A Gainesville Police Department Detective reported that the victim went to the pool at about 9 p.m. on May 30 with a friend, who is also a minor, and the girls sat in the hot tub. At about 11 p.m., Lord entered the gated pool area, immediately walked over to the hot tub, and asked the girls if he could get in with them. He reportedly told them they “don’t have to worry” because he is a law enforcement officer. The victims said he could get in the hot tub and that they planned to leave soon.

The detective reported that information about the events described below came from the victim, surveillence video at the pool, and Lord’s post-Miranda statements.

Lord reportedly offered to get a bottle of tequila, left briefly, and returned with the tequila, which he shared with the girls. He reportedly showed them a badge, emphasizing that he really is a law enforcement officer. The victim told the detective the badge was silver and “kind of oval.”

At about midnight, the victim’s friend left the pool, but the victim remained with Lord in the hot tub; within a few minutes, Lord allegedly tried to kiss and touch the victim, but she said she didn’t want him to touch or kiss her. Although Lord backed off at that moment, he allegedly pinned her up against a gate a few minutes later and sexually battered her. She freed herself by pushing him away, and Lord backed away with his hands up, signaling that he would not touch her again.

The victim said she believed Lord would leave her alone and sat in a chair near the hot tub, but Lord allegedly got into the hot tub and pulled the victim, still in her chair, forcibly into the hot tub. The victim got out quickly, and Lord allegedly grabbed her, preventing her from leaving, while she struggled to break free again.

The victim ran to the bathrooms but found them locked, and Lord again sexually battered her.

A still image from the surveillance video was shown to employees at the apartment complex, and they identified Lord and showed the detective his apartment, directly to the south of the pool. The victim identified Lord in a photo line-up, and he was arrested at his apartment.

Officers reported that at the time of his arrest, Lord had a silver Florida Department of Corrections Officer badge on his belt; Lord reportedly said he routinely wears the badge, even when not on duty, and he lifts his shirts up over the badge to show it off. He said he is often “mistaken” for a law enforcement officer because of this. The arrest report notes that Lord works at Lowell Correctional Institute, a female prison in Ocala.

Post Miranda, Lord reportedly estimated that he sexually battered the victim seven or eight times. He said he never asked the victim or her friend how old they were, but he expressed concern several times about providing alcohol to a minor.

The victim reportedly suffered injuries that were consistent with her account of the incident.

Lord has been charged with seven counts of sexual battery on a victim between the ages of 12 and 17, kidnapping with intent to facilitate a felony, and child abuse without serious bodily injury. He has no local criminal history; Judge Sheree Lancaster ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

    • What were 2 minors doing in the hot tub at 11:00 p.m?
Why didn’t the victim leave with her friend?
Why did she choose to sit in a chair instead of leaving after the first attack?

Not saying they’re to blame, and he’ll one day answer to the Lord but there’s an awful lot of other questions that should be asked and answered.

      • Wow. You go through apt of hoops to shift blame to the victims here and also read very selectively.

No means no. Period. She repeated this multiple times. It does not matter if she accepted a drink. It does not matter if she stayed solo.

This is a man whose day job is to control women. He is practiced in the art of deception (flashing a badge, pretending to be a police officer) and also in preying on people if he thinks he can get their guard down.

Glad she fought back, glad this is all on camera, and hope he gets locked up and declared a sex offender.

I hope investigators also speak to the women at Lowell. Could be that “first time offender” has a long history.

        • You are nutz. I didn’t blame them, I simply stated there were contributing factors.
If you hit your head with a hammer, do you do it again to see if it’s going to hurt again?
What matters is there were things she could have done to not put herself in a bad situation. If she were your daughter, would you trust this community enough to let her hang out at the hot tub at 11:00 p.m?

          • Should have said factors that put the victim in a more vulnerable position.
Usually people try to remove themselves from such environments.

          • You raise astute points. All these people are attacking you, simply because they let emotions dictate their views. This reads as an extremely avoidable situation.

      • You actually are blaming the victims. No girl should be raped because she went to a hot tub at nighttime, and given that the report says surveillance video shows him violently attacking her, NO, SHE DOES NOT NEED TO ANSWER A LOT OF OTHER QUESTIONS.

      • blaming a rape victim is next level vile, you are less than garbage for even considering defending this scumbag

        • Here’s another thought. Anyone else wondering what time the pool/hot tub hours were?
Most of the public pools I’ve seen close at 9 if not earlier.
According to their website, their ‘community is now gated, offering enhanced night time security and privacy for all our residents.’

Where was that enhanced security? Some kind of suit may come out of this one likely blaming the property owner.

          • you know who is to blame for a rape??? the rapist. That’s it. No one else.

          • Okay DumbDumb, I never said the rapist wasn’t to blame. Maybe you’re one of those people who hits your thumb over and over with a hammer waiting to see when it won’t hurt anymore.
Have you seen lawsuits of late? Someone walks on a sidewalk, trips on a tree root or unlevel section, and the organization tasked with maintaining the sidewalk gets sued.
Don’t be so naive as to believe there isn’t the possibility the management of the complex can’t or won’t be sued. The only likely defense is as stated, the hot tub wasn’t open after a certain hour.

          • I’m one of those people who don’t defend pedos. I’m one of those people who think they deserve to be under the jail, you should join them pedo lover.

          • DumbDumb, you’re also one of those people short on reading comprehension.
Do you get up in the morning wondering how much more dumber you can be today than the day before?

          • They did not say it was the children’s fault. Bet you can’t get within 1000 feet of a school either, huh gravy seal?

          • Another one. There’s an awful lot of your type around; no wonder Gainesville is so attractive to many.

      • What he did — sexually battering a child is awful, and nothing can excuse it. It doesn’t matter what questions are asked or what the situation was that kind of behavior form an adult (or anyone) is never okay.

By suggesting these questions need to be answered it seems to shift the focus away from what he did, and it feels like you are trying to make excuses for the perp or blame the victim.

Again, regardless of context or background details, such an act is inherently wrong and indefensible

        • It is reprehensible, never said or implied it wasn’t.
If any of the questions presented could avert someone or someone’s parents, from allowing their teenage daughter, or any person, to go into a hot tub late at night they’re worth considering. How many times have people on this medium condemned the lack of parental guidance in other instances.
Be realistic, a second thought by any of those involved may have provided that ‘ounce of prevention’ so many clamour about. Cutting this guy’s nutsack off may prevent it from happening again.

      • It doesn’t f*** matter WHY!?!?!? He shouldn’t have did it!!!! Yea you one of them let them that always take up for the white ppl no matter what they do!! If they did wrong they still right. You’re going to have to answer to the Lord for being a BIGOT!!!!!

        • @TW I agree, it doesn’t matter why, he shouldn’t have done it As to bigoted White people, yep, there are some, just as there are bigoted black people. The world would be a whole lot better if people would realize the skin and it’s color, is just a covering for the person inside. It’s the person inside that counts.

      • LOL You must love a rapist and fake king. You people treat women like trash. Its okay, we see you coming and avoid you like the plague you are.

          • That’s the funniest thing I’ve read all day and I’d love for you to explain my initiating your so-called ‘hate.’ Before you respond, best review the entire comment section and see who initiated first.
Maybe you and DumbDumb are related?
By the way, you still didn’t answer what, ‘you people’ are.
From my experiences, when someone says, ‘you people,’ it’s more reflective of ‘themselves.’

  • A guard at a women’s prison who sexually exploits vulnerable women and girls? And who pretends to have more power and status than he actually has? Unheard of!

Please expand this investigation to Lowell Correction.

  • How lovely! I guess our prisons are not scary enough? What else could explain our repeat offenders, and now the guards don’t fear jail?
Florida needs to toughen up more. Write to DeSantis today.

  • I’m glad he got what he deserves. I was there that night and There wasn’t much that I could do I tried saying no multiple times he just kept getting on me. I tried to leave and he did what he did. There’s no excuse but I’m glad he got caught and he got what he deserved. I’m glad I spoke up. Because who knows how many other girls he could’ve done this to …

  • I hope FDLE does a deep dive on the womens’ pods that he was working on at Lowells. This scumbag likely rir this to the prisoners as well.

  • First why TF you raping girls, second why are the girls at the pool 9pm -11pm at night where are the parents.. Then he go and buy tequila and they are drinking.. Now this nasty mf drunk and horny wanna take some young teen and rape her.. she the victim but mom needs to be locked up for her underage drinking..

  • Did you all really get babysat at 17 years old? You couldn’t be out with your friend from 9-11 pm? And not off at some party. At her own apartment complex. Just sitting with her friend minding her own business and everyone blames her instead of the fact that girls and women can’t be anywhere minding our own business without some predator trying to get us. Sick world and sick people who blame the girls.

  • Typical correction officer. 👮 The #1 category for abuse and sexual abuse are officers and Christian youth pastors. This is a fact. There is a database that keeps track. Those professions attract a power dynamic
