County closings and waste collection for Veterans Day
Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Other than emergency services, all Alachua County offices will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, in observance of Veterans Day.
The Veterans Day holiday will not affect residential curbside collection service for solid waste, recycling, and yard trash. The regular schedule for these services will occur on Monday. The transfer station at the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and the Hazardous Waste Collection Center will be open during their regularly scheduled hours.
The Office of Waste Collection and the five rural collection centers will be closed on Monday and will resume regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, Nov. 12. For more information, contact Alachua County Solid Waste and Resources Recovery Director Gus Olmos at 352-338-3233.
The Alachua County Animal Shelter’s schedule will remain unchanged for Veterans Day. The shelter is closed on Monday and will reopen on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Animal Resource Officers respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, to matters affecting public safety and animals in immediate danger. Citizens should dial 911 to report such emergencies on Sundays, holidays, and nightly between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. During regular hours (Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding holidays). For more information, contact Alachua County Animal Resources at 352-264-6870.
Something needs to be done about the days the rural collection centers are open. Depending on when the holidays fall the centers could only be open 2 days a week. This is ridiculous. Either start leaving a dumpster outside the gates like other counties do or make sure the collection centers are open at least 4 days a week, maybe 5. Hire part time people if necessary. The county commission likes to waste money on totally unnecessary items how about actually doing something that is.
