GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Thomas Alexander George, 49, and Tamika Hampton, 43, have been sentenced after entering pleas of nolo contendere to making a fraudulent insurance claim over $100,000.

According to an affidavit filed by the Florida Department of Financial Services, George was involved in a crash on June 7, 2019 and filed an insurance claim. George and Hampton claimed that George suffered a traumatic brain injury, along with cognitive and physical impairments, because of that crash. Over the next four years, George was treated by at least six different medical providers to support his claim that he had been seriously injured.

Over the next four years, the couple engaged in an elaborate scheme to obtain a multi-million dollar insurance settlement, with George pretending he couldn’t walk or talk.

On May 7, 2023, three days after a doctor wrote that George “still could not walk on his own, mumbled, and made grunting sounds.”, George was the passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy. Body camera video from the traffic stop “shows that George, unassisted, spoke to the officer and then exited the vehicle. Other body camera footage from that day shows that George was standing, unassisted, and then shortly after, running away from officers. Ultimately, George was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis and resisting without violence.” George was adjudicated guilty of resisting an officer without violence in December 2023 and was fined $376.

The affidavit concludes by stating that George knowingly misrepresented his injuries for an insurance payment of at least $6.6 million and Hampton supported the exaggeration by attending his medical appointments, speaking on his behalf, getting a court order to become his legal guardian, and making a video about his daily life.

Tha maximum sentence for insurance fraud over $100,000 is 30 years in prison, according to the plea documents.

In November 2025, Hampton entered a plea of nolo contendere to insurance fraud over $100,000, and Judge Denise Ferrero sentenced her to 3 years of probation and ordered her to pay $1,734.02 in restitution to the Florida Department of Financial Services.

In February, George entered a plea of nolo contendere to insurance fraud over $100,000, and Judge William Davis sentenced him to 180 days in jail with credit for two days served, followed by four years of probation; he was also ordered to pay $1,734.02 in restitution to the Florida Department of Financial Services.
