CR 239 closed to through traffic

Press release from Alachua County

ALACHUA, Fla. – Due to some cavities opening on CR 239, Public Works has closed CR 239 from NW 222nd Avenue to southbound onto NW 199th Avenue.

Detours are being posted.

Southbound traffic is being detoured onto NW 222nd Avenue and then to NW 91st Street south to CR 235. Northbound traffic is being detoured onto NW 199th Avenue west to CR 241 to CR 236.

Geotechnical consultants are being called to complete Ground Penetrating Radar imaging.

More information will be provided as it is available. Public Works will be releasing a map shortly.

  • Is that near future development sites, by chance? The western county is the aquifer recharge area, synonymous with a sinkhole prone area. It’s natural and happens wherever aquifer recharge areas are located.
But the eastern county is not. The county should direct all future development to the eastern county (east of G’ville W. 34th Street thru to the Hawthorne-Melrose areas).

    • The problem with the east side is that due to the Hawthorne Formation – a big wad of clay undelaying most of eastern Alachua County and some of Gainesville – water doesn’t drain well and results in plentiful wetlands.

” Central Florida limestone is known as the Ocala Group (made up of the Inglis Formation, the Williston Formation, and the Crystal River Formation, but that is probably more than you wanted to know.) This is the principle type of limestone in the area.

Sitting on top of the bedrock is a clay layer named the Hawthorn Formation. Made up of deposits from ancient rivers from the Appalachian Mountains, this clay (some people know it as gumbo clay) is a grey/greenish in color and very tacky. The clay layer is impervious to water, which means that water cannot seep through it to the underlying bedrock. Also, water, under pressure from the aquifer, cannot seep back out….”

  • This is nothing more than a typical Alachua County pothole. Just take a drive down CR-235 or CR-235A. If this was a bike path, it would have been expertly repaired overnight.

  • Yes while you all fight for Road Budget we are still on worn out Pavement and Dirt Roads in Rural Alachua. What if we Paved Alachua before we RePave the Best of Neighborhoods that have pavement that isnt defective or limerock
