Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – At about 5 p.m. this evening, crews from Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to an extrication call at the 11500 block of West Newberry Road.

They arrived at the scene to find a two-vehicle accident, with both vehicles heavily damaged. Newberry Road was blocked in the eastbound direction and was reduced to one lane westbound.

Two occupants were entrapped in one of the vehicles. Crews quickly and effectively used the “Jaws of Life” to remove the occupants from the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger sustained injuries and were transported by ambulance to UF Health Shands.

Alachua County Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone to always wear their seatbelt.

  • So thankful for first responders – we are blessed to have so many who run toward trouble and help so capably!

  • Not to add insult to injury, you think Newberry Rd is bad now?
Wait till the 6 lane construction begins. Then 241 south to Newberry 4 lane begins. If it is a slow, country way of life you seek, look elsewhere.

  • This is at the entrance of Fletcher’s Mill(115th St and Newberry Road) . I have lived there since 1998 and this accident makes 31 THIRTY ONE that I have counted, one resulted in a fatality. The combination of people going 50-70mph on the stretch between 91st st and Parker Road in both directions, the little hill that blocks the view of westbound traffic just before Fletcher’s Mill and the needto cross westbound traffic, wait in the median break and exit into eastbound traffic has proven to be a bad combination. We have asked for and had several traffic studies with the ultimate goal of a traffic light, we were told there is too short of a distance between Fletcher’s Mill and Parker road to erect a light. However, it is the exact same distance from Fletcher’s Mill to Parker road as it is from Parker Road to the light at Tioga, and there is a light there. When brought to the attention of those in charge, we were told to quit complaining or they would just close the median break and be done with it. How many people will have to die and how much property damage must occur before a solution to this problem is found?

  • 31 people that should of turned right and done a U turn. I go this way every day at 5 and every day some idiot tries to shoot out in between cars. Floor it only to slam on brakes in the median because there are cars coming from the west.
