Cyclist killed in Cross Creek accident

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – A 41-year-old man from Lexington, South Carolina, was killed this morning when he was hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in the Cross Creek area.
At about 10:30 a.m. on February 27, a 66-year-old Citra man was driving a black Toyota SUV southbound on County Road 325 near SE 174th Place and encountered a bicyclist who was in the roadway for reasons that are still under investigation. The SUV hit the cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, and the cyclist was fatally injured. The driver of the SUV, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

The cyclist was in the roadway because that is where you ride a bike. I ride that road often and think it is one of the better ones.
Roads are dangerous…better to ride in a road that has a bike lane.
Bicyclists are required to ride in the normal traffic direction, and no on the sidewalk, no? Motorists are supposed to give them wide berth, not run over them. Unfortunately, that happens a lot. Unless the cyclists was lying in the road and not on the bike this is outrageous statement of incident.
Maybe instead of stopping broken tail light, rolling over stop bars, tinted window, obscured plates….officers should pull over speeders, distracted and aggressive drivers too.
CR 325 doesn’t have a very wide area or designated bike lane. Bikes are supposed to be traveling in direction of traffic flow. Vehicles are supposed to give a wide berth to bicycles. CR 325 has a lot of shadowed or shaded areas by tree canopy which can effect visibility. The article doesn’t say nor has anything been reported as whether the bike was in riding in tge middle of the road, turning from a side road, avoiding a road obstacle, etc. Bicycles have a right on tge roadways but bicyclist also need to understand that they can not go up against a motor vehicle. Its tragic no matter what.
