Date set for City Hall Plaza reopening

Press release from the City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – City of Gainesville leaders invite all neighbors to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of renovations to City Hall Plaza.
When: 10-11 a.m. on Friday, May 8
Where: City Hall Plaza, 200 E. University Ave.
The civic courtyard includes new structural improvements, lighting, landscaping, seating, and renovations to the existing Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Garden and the Sister Cities Monument Garden, and now the plaza can accommodate as many as 2,400 people. The plaza also features a triangular inlay of colored bricks repurposed from one of the City’s rainbow crosswalks.
The Gainesville City Commission approved the reconstruction project in 2023 to address ongoing maintenance issues in the plaza by replacing both original ponds, built in the 1960s, with a more functional space. The final design was approved in September 2025, and construction began the following month.
The $1.8 million reconstruction of City Hall Plaza was funded through a 2019 City-issued revenue note for public projects and the Wild Spaces & Public Places (WSPP) surtax approved by Alachua County voters.

Betcha Ward’s dozen donuts the downtown area will be the cleanest it’s been in 5 years.
Fix the roads. Raise the reading and math levels. This will provide nothing to most people. Just a few who can look out of their office windows and feel good about themselves. Cut, cut, cut that ribbon. Whooopee!!
