Staff report from Alachua County Sheriff’s Office social media posts

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – On Saturday night, June 28, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) responded to stabbings that seriously injured three people and involved multiple locations, along with a separate block party that obstructed Holden Park Road. This weekend is the annual Hawthorne Homecoming event, a community family reunion celebration that brings people to Hawthorne every summer.

At about 10:45 p.m., ASO posted a “Public Safety Notice – Unlawful Assembly” on Facebook, issuing an “immediate warning” to stop blocking Holden Park Road, east of U.S. Hwy 301; the post said the party (shown above) was disrupting traffic and emergency services. The post urged “all individuals involved to disperse peacefully and without delay.”

At about midnight, ASO posted that all roadways had been cleared and returned to normal operation.

At about 11 p.m., an ASO post stated that deputies were in the 5800 block of SE 223rd Street in response to a call about three people who had been stabbed; all three were transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The post said the investigation involved multiple locations; although these locations were not provided by ASO, social media posts by Hawthorne residents mentioned a law enforcement response at a home, at CVS, and at Love’s.

  • Is there a specific law or ordinance against street gatherings or block parties? If so, it really needs to be enforced. Maybe a permit system that requires prepaid law enforcement and security. Maybe the people who want to gather at night could be required to do so on private property, with the written permission of the owner/manager in hand.

    • Around here the only enforcement is done to those they know obey laws; the rest they just allow to destroy the community.

  • Why is it that this city makes exceptions for certain ‘cultures’ to break the law and have these massive, illegal gatherings that cater to debauchery and violence? This is the ‘Easter Egg Hunt’at TB McPherson Park all over again. This seems to be a privilege that is bestowed upon a certain group in our county- a privilege that is obviously being abused.

    • No one bats an eye when all the specific demographic of college kids destroy and tear up University Avenue after the Gators won Nationals…..

      • That specific demographic included all races of college kids. The city closed roads in anticipation of a huge block party with multiple law enforcement and emergency personnel on site. The flash mob pop up parties without security are the ones that seem to have the violence issues which cause the eye batting.

  • Can’t even argue with the racists about this common behavior amongst POC and I’m A.A. We’re tired of these ppl ruining stuff for the good Black folk.

Was there an official assigned location for the event?

  • Can we allllllllll just get alone come on stop the dumb stuff lets enjoy and embrace each other why not!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • No, apparently we can’t “all just get along.” As to why not, it seems it’s just not in human nature we always have to feel “better than” someone else. It’s been that way for time immemorial and I doubt it will ever change. All we can do is live like decent human beings in our small circle of life.
