DeSantis Activates Florida National Guard to Assist the Department of Corrections

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 22-213 activating the Florida National Guard to assist the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) in an effort to reduce overtime and provide relief for correctional officers on a temporary basis.

During the 2022 Legislative Session, Governor Ron DeSantis approved record pay increases to recruit and retain corrections officers. These historic pay increases and other incentives have shown early signs of success, with a net gain of nearly 640 officers since the conclusion of the 2022 session, compared to a net loss of more than 465 in the same amount of time prior. As these successful measures continue to bring more highly qualified officers to the FDC, this action and partnership will address officer vacancies on a temporary, short-term basis.

  • National Guard? This is a test of the emergency broadcast system….if this was an actual emergency…will they be coming to GNV?

  • Haiti could be an excellent prison import destination. The poor country needs a growth industry to keep citizens employed there. But they’ll need a good wall for Dominican Republic protection too

    • The army is building that vehicle repair facility across from a Grace & the county jail…the old fairgrounds next to airport is closer than Haiti. The army guys I talk to tell me they fix their vehicles where they break…UN troops can fly in easy to the airport and get to their vehicles & equipment very EZ there.

  • I Think That this is Awesome! Now why Do you Governor DeSantis give Teachers A Raise? Is there not a Shortage of them? Are They No it as Important as correction Officers? Why out of 50 States are we 48th in how much we pay Them!😢🤷🤷

  • Just how will the NG assist the DOC with inmates? NG cannot carry a weapon in the prison, they have no formal training in the care, control & custody of inmates.
    Stay tuned for future developments…..

    • Gee, I failed to see your brilliant idea to fill the temporary shortage of prison guards. Where’s your better idea? Some people just like to gripe I guess…

    • Under martial law, the military takes over the jail…this is only a test…if it were an actual emergency, you should go to the stadium where we can process you…

  • This man is worth than Trump he thank he got more sense than any one in Fla people need to wake up he just another con will try to do anything to get a vote he is nothing but con and A big lier

    • Edgar, you embarrass yourself. Tell me one lie. Also, who could possibly be better than Desantis? …I’m all ears.

      • Hi Sherman, I’d like to comment please. 1. DeSantis to me is only trying to bribe others for a vote and it doesn’t matter what or how he trys to accomplish it. 2. This man has left out the elderly, vets, SSDI and S.Securty.. instead of allowing the ones who need just as much help as a person with 1 or 5 children. How come they were not able to receive a ck of $450 you see sir, he has not did 1 thing to help other people who are having just as many or more problems. I know that Trump will NOT let that happen to others. So, if you would please just think about it, what if it happen to be your mom or dad. Or someone that is on Disability because of a spinal disease and literally can not work who only brings in $840 a month, especially if your father served in the military and most likely protected you so way or another…

  • Correctional officers have extraordinarily high rates of suicide and domestic violence. The job of torturer turns out to be ruinous inside and outside the prison walls. Way to spread that to the National Guard now too.

    • “The job of torturer turns out to be ruinous inside & outside the prison walls”….what a load of Biden. Prison guards are professionals, not torturers…I wish they were torturers because that would be an incentive for felons to not break the law and go to jail. Jail is not supposed to be a country club.

      • So you think torture is a genuinely good idea and will yield a positive result in the person’s life after they are released? And you want your neighbors to go to work as torturers and come home to beat their spouses and children and commit suicide? Nice.

        • Kenny. Coddling thugs don’t work. And your the one who brought up torture. Jail is not supposed to be a pleasant experience.

  • A fine move! Rather than turn them out through a revolving door like other places, or never arrest people like City of Gainesville. Keep criminals looked up and streets safe! THANK YOU GOVERNOR (and next President) DESANTIS!!!!!

  • This is great. But you need to give nurses a raise. I’m an RN working in a state facility. We have agency direct care staff that are making more than our LPN’s. If you don’t assist us I fear we will have to strike like they are doing in MN. Nurses are getting assaulted by patients. Injuries have increased exponentially.
