Draft school boundary maps are available

Staff report

Updated on February 4 with new link, more phone-friendly.

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Draft school boundary maps are now available at this link.

A total of nine draft maps have been posted — three each for elementary, middle, and high schools. Community members will be able to enter their home address to see the proposed zoned school for each map. Users can also compare proposed boundaries to existing boundaries.

Important note: To view the maps on a phone, turn the phone to landscape. On all devices, tap on the “Map Layers” button to select and deselect the maps using the “eye” icons. To see a draft map for a specific level of schools, you have to first select the level — so, for example, to see the Elementary maps, first deselect “High Schools” and then select “Elementary Schools.” You can then turn each draft map on and off.

The draft maps were developed as part of the district’s Our Schools – Future Ready comprehensive planning initiative. The initiative is designed to position local schools for future success through short- and long-term strategies related to educational programs, facilities, transportation, and right-sizing the district. The overall goal is to ensure district resources are focused on providing high-quality educational programs for all students.

Since the launch of the initiative, the district has been working with local planning firm JBPro to gather input from families, students, staff, and community members about their priorities. That engagement is continuing, with eight community input sessions scheduled between February 4-18 at locations throughout the county. A complete schedule is available at alachuaschools.net/ourschoolsfutureready.

Each session will include a presentation on the proposed strategies, including the draft boundary maps. Participants will be able to provide immediate feedback using their phones during the presentation, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and share additional input.

A final comprehensive plan is scheduled to be presented to the School Board for consideration and a vote on March 12.

  • Draft (n): A preliminary version of a plan, document, or picture.

It took 20+ years for a suggested rezoning map draft. Maybe it’s time local voters redefine what “efficiency” is. At this rate, we’ll have school zones for our children’s grandchildren.
