Earleton man arrested for holding appliance repairmen at gunpoint

Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Edward Spiegel, 79, was arrested yesterday after allegedly threatening to shoot two appliance repairmen who were reportedly trying to leave his property because he brandished a revolver.

At about 6:14 p.m. on February 4, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a home in Earleton, where two appliance repairmen said they were at the home to repair a washing machine that Spiegel bought from their used appliance business.

The victims said that when they arrived, Spiegel met them outside, brandished a revolver, and told them he’d already had a bad day.

The victims said Spiegel set the revolver on top of the washing machine while they worked, and when one of them said to the other that they should leave, Spiegel told them they could not leave. The victims said Spiegel grabbed the revolver, waved it, and pointed it at the victims while telling them not to move.

The victims said they feared for their lives, and they called 911; one of the victims reportedly took a video of the incident.

Post Miranda, Spiegel reportedly did not want to speak to deputies. However, while a deputy was reading him his Miranda rights, Spiegel reportedly said he had been drinking alcohol for the past hour.

Spiegel has been charged with two counts of kidnapping to facilitate the commission of a felony, two counts of false imprisonment, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has no criminal history, and Judge Jonathan Ramsey ordered him held without bail on the aggravated assault charges, pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing. Judge Ramsey set bail at $70,000 on the other charges.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • A great example why guns should at least be licensed, insured and registered with annual renewals just like a car. This guy shouldn’t have access to a firearm and probably not be allowed to drive.

    • We just had a guy stabbed in the gead with a machete. Do we need to license them insure them and go through yearly registration. There were more people killed and hit by vehicles in Alachua County then shot last year.

      • If there are tens of thousands of machete attacks in the next year and they become th eleading cause of death for our kids, yeah, we should look into it, but not seeing that happening.

Cars have a function which, make them indespensable for almost all. Guns do not.

        • So do kitchen knives, baseball bats, snow shovels, human hands, etc but every year someone manages to die by homicide from them. Common sense 101. Knives do not stab themselves, hands do not strangle by themselves, guns do not shoot by themselves. It is the homicidal intent of the person that uses an object to inflict injury to another. When you can license people’s intents let me know.

        • Ah yes, Jazzy. There you liberals go again using 18 and 19 year olds as ‘kids’ to alter your data. The leading cause of death in CHILDREN (1-17 years of age) is motor vehicle deaths. https://www.congress.gov/118/meeting/house/115787/documents/HMKP-118-JU00-20230419-SD018.pdf

You continue to use 18 and 19 year old adults, and shootings near/on school property (regardless if it’s 3am), to boost your numbers in order to scare people. Be honest for a change. The majority of firearm deaths are by suicide, not homicide. And the majority of deaths of CHILDREN is vehicle-related.

    • Dave, before making wishful dreams like this, you need to read or reread the Constitution. Guns are a Constitutional Right A car is a privilege and can be regulated. BTW, Mr Spiegel has a clean record after 79 years, so your preferred outcome would be extreme anyway.

    • I’m guessing you never read second amendment or believe in the constitution in the United States

  • What is going on??? It used to be old folks used to get upset if someone went on their lawn. Now…..looks like they go postal at the drop of the hat.

  • The lights are on but nobody is home. Another classic example of the family knew there was a problem and didn’t anything.
