Eastside High School International Baccalaureate Diploma pass rates top international rates

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The percentage of Eastside High School seniors in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program who successfully earned their IB diplomas in 2021 (92%) and 2022 (91%) is above the global pass rate of 85.6% (ibo.org). Students reached these impressive milestones even though teaching and learning were significantly altered by the pandemic during their two years of full IB instruction.

This past May, 177 junior and senior Eastside International Baccalaureate students took a total of 683 rigorous IB exams covering multiple subjects within six major academic disciplines. The number of points required to earn the IB Diploma is 24. The average number of points obtained by Eastside High School IB Diploma Candidates was 33, and the highest number of diploma points awarded to one candidate was 43.

The IB Diploma Program was founded in 1968 in Switzerland and has been offered at Eastside since 1985. Graduating its first IB Diploma class in 1987 makes EHS IB the oldest magnet program in the District. Today there are more than 7,500 IB programs in 160 countries.

The International Baccalaureate Program’s mission is “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” (ibo.org). Students in the program spend their junior and senior years studying either five or six subject areas, writing extended research essays, demonstrating their abilities to critically think about how we acquire knowledge, and completing activities that incorporate creativity, activity, and service (CAS) into their daily lives. The curriculum is unique in that it emphasizes interdisciplinary and intercultural connections and develops an appreciation for how knowledge is obtained, processed, and shared with others.

IB Diploma students not only learn to develop research and writing skills in multiple disciplinary areas, they are also required to make oral presentations demonstrating complex levels of analysis and synthesis. IB diploma candidates are scored holistically through Individual Assessments (IAs), projects, portfolios, exhibitions, oral exams, written exams, and essays. IB Diploma Program graduates leave armed with a depth and breadth of knowledge from their unique high school experiences.

Five EHS IB diploma recipients achieved 40 or more out of a possible 45 points. Students who earned 40 or more diploma points are marked with an asterisk*.
