Emergency sewer repairs require detours near Chiles Elementary

Press release from Gainesville Regional Utilities

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – GRU is making emergency repairs to the sewer system south of Chiles Elementary School in Haile Plantation. The repairs are expected to take several months and will impact traffic in the area, specifically along School House Road.

A road closure with a detour is in place between the roundabout at SW 98th Blvd. and SW 34th Lane. As repairs take place, we expect to modify this detour and set up a complete or partial closure of the roundabout in order to complete all repairs. We plan to maintain pedestrian traffic along School House Road throughout the duration of our work. GRU is coordinating with Chiles administration and local transportation officials on traffic diversions.

We apologize for the inconvenience while we work to improve the safety and reliability of our sewer system.

Background

GRU’s Water/Wastewater Department responded to a small sanitary sewer overflow on Sunday, Aug. 10. During the service call, crews discovered aging sewer mains that required immediate attention to avoid more significant and costly damage and impact to the community.

GRU has been working in the area for several months to repair aging gravity mains that are impeding flows through the system and causing potential safety hazards. We are replacing the existing sewer mains with PVC pipes to avoid future incidents.

  • Thanks Ed! Deferred maintenance isn’t a plan to save GRU customers money. With all the growth in the area we need robust infrastructure funding and maintenance. Is this penny wise pound foolishness?
