Ex-boyfriend arrested after kicking door, damaging windows, spray-painting a car, then leading deputies on a high-speed chase on Tower Road

BY JENNIFER CABRERA

Devin Andrew Baulding, 28, was arrested yesterday morning and charged with three felonies and four misdemeanors after allegedly breaking his ex-girlfriend’s cell phone, stealing her SIM card, trying to kick down her door and break her windows after being locked out, spray-painting her car, then fleeing at high speed down Tower Road.

The victim called 911 at about 3:00 a.m. Monday morning and reported that Baulding was trying to kick her door in. She told deputies that she had invited him to visit with their children for Father’s Day, then she fell asleep and woke up to the sound of Baulding throwing items. They began arguing, and Baulding allegedly threw the victim’s phone, breaking the glass. She said Baulding charged at her, so she ran to a neighboring apartment, at which point Baulding left in his truck.

The victim said that when she returned to her apartment, the SIM card was missing from her phone. She used a WiFi calling app to call Baulding and ask him to return the SIM card. She said he eventually admitted to taking it and said he would bring it back and wanted to talk to her. The victim said she told him she would only speak to him through the door and that he began trying to kick open her door. She said he then pulled screens off two windows and tried to force them open, damaging both windows.

The victim and some nearby witnesses reported that Baulding then started spray painting the victim’s vehicle, painting every body panel and the windows. He then left but reportedly hit her vehicle with his truck on the way out.

As deputies were responding, they saw a truck matching the description provided by the victim, and two patrol vehicles turned on their lights and sirens. A deputy reported that Baulding immediately accelerated at a high rate of speed “without regard for the safety of persons or property.” The deputy also reported that Baulding turned off his headlights while driving north on Tower Road at a high rate of speed. Baulding allegedly hit a fence and a sign near NW 88th Terrace but continued fleeing. He was eventually stopped with a PIT maneuver but reportedly refused to comply with commands from deputies and was seen reaching into the center console and other areas in the passenger compartment of his car. He then allegedly began walking away and was eventually apprehended by an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office K-9. He allegedly continued to resist, even after apprehension.

Post Miranda, Baulding reportedly admitted fleeing from deputies but denied all the other actions, saying he never left his residence before fleeing from deputies. A white spray paint can was reportedly found on the floorboard of his truck. He has been charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling during a state of emergency or riot, damage to property over $1,000, aggravated fleeing with property damage, theft, criminal mischief under $200, resisting arrest without violence, and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage. He is being held on $29,000 bond.

Baulding was charged with domestic battery by strangulation in August of 2020, but the charges were dropped. He was convicted of property damage over $200 in an October 2021 incident in which he smashed the victim’s phone; he pled nolo contendere and was fined $376 by Judge Thomas Jaworski on March 24, 2022.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Interesting… Not one comment on this white dude. Had he been black or Latino… Different story.

  • Did they always be just friends and had kids together? How did it start, as roommates to share expenses? This is why we need deed restricted single occupancy efficiency units — owned, not rented— in HOA-secured condos. No couples or kids allowed, must sell and move out. Problem solved.

    • Are you a landlord? You would still need to go to court to evict him. Problem
Not solved. It’s a civil thing.

    • This is ignorant and disgusting. So families are supposed to go homeless ???

  • Exactly this guy did all this damage raised all that hell and get a 29,000 dollar bond a black guy does half that and get a half million bond racist ass system and judges

    • Dude. These people are dysfunctional. You are the
Definition of racist if you bring it up. Is there a better
Country in this world? No. Stay away from trouble!
You have a chip on your shoulder. Pray to god &
Jesus…they’re not racist. Try to get some counseling
Because you’re putting that negativity out there.
The US constitution innumerates that we are all equal
      And have unalienable rights.

    • How would a picture of me EXPLAIN the actions ????? This is a disgusting comment.

  • There seems to be no doubt this guy didn’t get the message from not even getting a slap on the wrist last two times through the system. The judge needs to take action on the totality of his ongoing behavior before the woman and kids end up as victims to violence the next time this escalates.

  • Three strikes and he should be OUT! Domestic violence is not a thing to be taken lightly, no matter what color or sex you are.
