I refer to your other excellent opinion piece encouraging citizen involvement in local politics. The article above is proof. You list EIGHT partisan races, yet the Republican Party only has a candidate in TWO of the races. The second largest political party in the county only has a candidate in one fourth of the races. In my opinion if you don’t run a candidate, you give up a lot of your ability to whine about how the government is run. Get involved, Republicans.
Brinkman, Darnell, Watson. What a choice for Sheriff.
Only real question: Which one of these three should be invited to come be the first Sheriff of our new Springs County?
Watson
Chronicle, you must have a typo above. You list Clovis Watson as a Democrat
Calumny Man is a Republican unless the Gainesville Sun prints Fake News.
Gainesville Sun June 29, 2006:
“Alachua’s Watson Switches Parties, Blasts Democrats
Alachua County Republicans gained two new allies and candidates for the 2008 elections Friday at an event intended to show the growth of the county party.
Alachua City Manager Clovis Watson and Ward Scott, a Santa Fe Community College professor, traded in their Democratic party registrations for Republican ones and announced their intentions to run at a “switch event” held in downtown Gainesville.
“I’m a man of action and ideas,” Watson told a group of a few dozen Republicans who attended the event. “I cannot continue to support a party that uses criticism and calumny as its stock in trade.”
“We’re turning this county a crimson red,” said Watson, who declined to say what office he planned to run for.
The event, attended by Republican Party of Florida Chairwoman Carole Jean Jordan, included speeches honoring the new Republicans and defending Watson in his ongoing legal issues with state House of Representatives candidate Charlie Grapski.s
Scott, a city of Alachua resident, announced his intention for a 2008 rematch against County Commissioner Mike Byerly.
Byerly defeated Scott in a Democratic primary in 2004 after a write-in candidate prevented the race from being put on the general election ballot.”
Hmmm, Brinkman is today’s write in candidate for Sheriff. Wonder where someone learned that trick?
So 14 years later, Byerly is still a Commissioner, Scott is still bitter he lost, Watson is still a flip flopping opportunist, and county Republicans are still bitter the county is not crimson red yet. Things never change. Sad.
