Fall Wildflower Walk at Barr Hammock South
Press release from Alachua County
MICANOPY, Fla. – To celebrate October as Florida Native Plant Month, the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department is hosting an ecologist-led, family-friendly hike on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024, beginning at the Barr Hammock Preserve South Trailhead (300 SE 175th Ave., Micanopy). The hike is from 2 to 6 p.m. This event is free, but space is limited to 20 people. Please RSVP for this event by emailing mneelands@alachuacounty.us or calling 352-451-7818.
As the summer heat dissipates, Florida’s plant communities burst into bloom in a dazzling “second spring.” Participants will see native wildflowers and pollinators and learn about the Alachua County Forever program’s restoration efforts, which is funded by the voter-approved Wild Spaces Public Places surtax. The terrain of this 3-mile hike is flat, but there is very little shade, so bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and drinking water.
