Farmland conservation proposed strategy workshop to be held August 7

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Alachua County and the Alachua Conservation Trust (ACT) are hosting a public workshop to share information about a proposed strategy to expand the conservation of farmland throughout the county.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Northside Park Senior Recreation Center (5701 NW 34th Blvd., Gainesville). The public is encouraged to provide input on the strategy during the workshop. Light refreshments will be provided.
The strategy is expected to increase opportunities for interested landowners to protect their agricultural lands through conservation easements under the Alachua County Forever Program. Staff will be available to explain the details of the strategy and answer questions. A brief presentation on the strategy goals, process, and how it will be implemented will be given around 5:45 p.m.
Two or more Alachua County Rural Concerns Advisory Committee members may attend this event. Two or more Alachua County Land Conservation Board members may attend this event.
The Alachua County Forever Program is the county’s land conservation program. It has protected over 34,000 acres within the county in its 24 years of work, protecting the local water resources, wildlife habitats and working lands and green spaces.

Less land on the tax rolls, more taxes on the residents.
So much for equity.
Equity needs to be tied to responsibility.
If the County values conservation and is willing to reward others who do, why would someone who doesn’t value conservation gets rewarded the same as one who does? That wouldn’t be fair.
So, equity is always tied to a set of values.
Apart from that, co-existing means learning to accept that I’m surrounded by people many of whom I don’t share the values of.
