FDOT activates mid-block pedestrian crossing signals on University Avenue
Press release from Florida Department of Transportation
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Pedestrians now have two new places to safely cross University Avenue near the University of Florida campus. FDOT recently activated traffic signals at the mid-block pedestrian crossings near NW 14th Street and Gale Lemerand Drive. With the addition of the mid-block pedestrian crossings to the NW 16th Street and NW 19th Street crosswalks, FDOT has provided four additional places to safely cross University Avenue since summer 2023.
Vehicle and pedestrian movements are now signal-controlled through the addition of mast arms and pedestrian signals at both locations. Additionally, the raised crosswalks serve as traffic calming devices in lieu of the temporary speed tables previously in place along University Avenue, which were removed as part of the project.
FDOT would like to remind pedestrians to be vigilant and use pedestrian crossings safely, as well as remind drivers to always obey traffic signals. For more information on how to navigate mid-block pedestrian signals safety, please visit FDOT Mid-Block Pedestrian Crossing Safety.
Great!
Now the, “All about me, my texting and inability to walk while paying attention to my surroundings” students, – which are more important than following EXISTING pedestrian laws, will only restrict the efficient flow of traffic more.
Watch the bicyclist riding in the road stop for those pedestrians in the crosswalks….
That’s right! Magic DOT paint will protect you from all harm!
But here’s the reality: the smallest entity (i.e. the most vulnerable) in any collision bears all the real responsibility.
Wonder how much _this_ cost the taxpayers…
Might need school crossing guards
Doubt that will work. Many of the kids these days lack respect for authority.
So…..no more jaywalking? Right….as they stare at their phones with earbuds blocking any situational awareness.
I drive through there several times a week. This was well planned and is working well. A job well done. …. read Alachua Chronicle everyday. Comment seldom, while I am here want to say Great job to all Chronicle staff!! Thank you!
Weren’t there already crosswalks at signalized intersections? We’re those no longer usable?
The real issue is people jaywalking and no legal enforcement. And it’s not just along University Avenue, it’s all over this town.
