FDOT activates Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on East University Avenue

Press release from Florida Department of Transportation

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Pedestrians will have a new, safe place to cross East University Avenue (State Road 26) as FDOT recently activated a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB). Located near NE 26th Terrace, adjacent to Fred Cone Park, the newly constructed PHB improves safety and increases pedestrian mobility on East University Avenue.

PHBs are advanced crosswalk systems that control both vehicle and pedestrian movements using traffic signals. Please click below for a video on how PHBs function.

FDOT selected American Lighting and Signalization LLC to complete this $350,000 project by fall 2023, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

  • We have something similar to that in keystone heights but nobody pays attention to them even the cops run through it

    • I travel down this road several times a week and see them jaywalk back and fourth, they won’t use it. waste of money.

  • Yay. very few people are going to stop at it, just like the flashing crosswalk on SE Williston road near sugar hill.

  • Isn’t that what the crosswalk at the intersections are for or am I missing something
