FDOT begins safety improvements project on SW 16th Avenue
Press release from Florida Department of Transportation
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Construction is underway on a safety improvements project on SW 16th Avenue (State Road 226) at SW 10th Terrace. FDOT will install a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) that will improve safety and increase pedestrian mobility in the area by providing pedestrians with a new place to safely cross SW 16th Avenue. PHBs are advanced crosswalk systems that control both vehicle and pedestrian movements using traffic signals. For a video on how PHBs operate, please see the video below.
Traffic will be maintained in accordance with FDOT standards. Drivers can expect single-lane closures for both directions of SW 16th Avenue during off-peak hours. Pedestrians will also see periodic sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours. FDOT encourages drivers and pedestrians to obey traffic laws, be alert to construction workers and traffic devices, and closely follow signage along the detour routes.
FDOT selected AJ General Construction Services Inc. to complete this $613,000 project by spring 2024, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.
Drivers seeking real-time traffic alerts are encouraged to visit www.FL511.com or download the FL511 app prior to their journey.

“FDOT encourages drivers and pedestrians to obey traffic laws.” 🤣🤣🤣 Good luck with that.
More wasted money. People don’t cross at the beacons, the crosswalks or any other place whose purpose is to provide a relatively safe passage from point “A” to point “B”. Is it people are just too lazy to walk 30 ft to the crosswalk or can they just not read? Maybe they just don’t feel the laws apply to them.
People know who they are.
There’s 2 of “those” people.
The state should not be teaching people that magic road paint and flashing lights will protect them from an onrushing vehicle.
600K for a flashy light crosswalk?!?!?
I’m in the wrong business, I need to get into the flashy light construction scam errrr business.
How about you fix nw 53rd avenue all the way to Waldo Road
Someone is going to be killed due to the deep grooves in the pavement.
