FDOT District 2 and UF Police partner for back-to-school safety event

Press release from the Florida Department of Transportation

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation District 2 is partnering with the University of Florida and the University of Florida Police Department in addition to local safety organizations for a “Stay Safe, Stay Cool” event on the first day of fall classes.

The event will take place on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at the corner of 13th Street and University Avenue in Gainesville.

FDOT and safety partners will engage with students, faculty, and residents during this time to promote vital Target Zero safety practices such as properly using crosswalks, wearing helmets, avoiding texting while driving, and not driving under the influence.

  • I initially assumed this was for pre-k, K-6 age group students from the headline !…Interesting that government has to fund / sponsor events like this for ADULTS who are attending an upper tier university and supposedly smarter than the average bear. Perhaps FDOT and LEOs can give out happy face stickers to those that cross at the crosswalk, wear the helmet and not text whilst walking into moving traffic, etc.

    • Every time law enforcement has enhanced car, bike, pedestrian activity around UF, the violators walking, biking and scooting outnumber the vehicle violators by 10:1. But the actual money tickets go against the drivers. Not fair or logical but this is a blue town after all.
