Fire at Windsor Court Apartments disrupts traffic; apartments were unoccupied

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Four vacant apartments were affected by a fire at Windsor Court Apartments this morning, but nobody was injured.

At about 2:58 a.m., Gainesville Fire Rescue crews responded to an apartment building fire at 3600 SW 20th Avenue, Windsor Court Apartments; SW 20th Avenue was closed west of SW 34th Street while the crews fought the fire.

Crews made entry into the building within six minutes, and 31 firefighters searched the building for any occupants while working on extinguishing the fire and protecting adjacent buildings. The first firefighters to arrive reported heavy fire, and it took 26 minutes to get the fire under control in four apartments.

The affected apartments were vacant, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Gainesville Fire Rescue was assisted by Alachua County Fire Rescue and Gainesville Police Department during the incident. GFR District Chief Jeff Schuhmacher credited the quick response from Engine 4 with keeping the fire in check, which allowed other crews to search for victims.
