Fire crews respond to another fire at Southern Fuelwood

Press release from Alachua County Fire Rescue

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Early this morning, firefighters from Alachua County Fire Rescue, Newberry Fire Department, and High Springs Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at Southern Fuelwood. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a single kiln and extinguish the pallets of wood that were removed from the structure. There were no injuries.

Southern Fuelwood’s last fire was on June 26, and this is the 11th fire in the past 29 months.

      • Would you happen to know which herbicide?..or does it even matter?
I wonder if most of the commercially available local firewood is laden with herbicides from downed poison trees (or any other chemicals that they may age/process firewood with) . Don’t risk burning that crap at home…just buy some from a dude in a pickup or split your own.

  • How much does it cost for the fire department to keep going to southern fuelwood to put out the fires? They do get a bill right? This is becoming a nuisance and they shouldn’t be spending my tax dollar on their operating problems.

    • Not worried about your tax dollar, but I do worry about the health and safety of these firemen. They shouldn’t have to keep dealing with this over and over.

      • Yes!!!! The firefighters and first responders are continuously being put in danger by the repetitive fires at SF. I understand the many risks and dangers of being a firefighter/first responder, being married to one for almost 20 years; however, this many fires at a single location is excessive!! Something has got to change!!!

Southern Fuels needs to consider these heroes in Alachua and surrounding counties which they repeatedly put in danger far too often. Eleven fires in almost 2.5 years are perilous and show a lack of community concern and welfare for our families!

  • Isn’t this the same company that sells 4-5 slivers of wood in a bag for $10-$12 at Publix and convenient stores? With a markup like that I’d think they’d at least be able to fix up their property some.
