Staff report based on Gainesville Fire Rescue release

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville Fire Rescue extinguished a fire in a high-rise Midtown apartment complex early this morning.

At about 1:02 a.m., units responded to the 8th floor of 931 Apartments (931 W. University Avenue), where a fire in a laundry room was quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system and the rapid response of firefighters.

No injuries were reported, but several apartments suffered water damage. The fire is believed to have started with a vacuum cleaner in the laundry room.

Vacuum cleaners can pose a fire risk if not properly maintained. Recent recalls for fire hazards include brands like Bissell, which recalled certain models due to overheating issues, and Hoover, which had recalls related to electrical failures.

Always check for product recalls and stay informed to keep your home safe. Remember to regularly inspect your appliances and avoid using them near flammable materials.

  • That’s pretty scary – it’s a good thing it was gotten under control quickly. Fires in high rise buildings can be catastrophic!

  • Many are cordless and use Lithium ion rechargeable batteries, which can spontaneously catch fire and explode.
