Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Former Governor Buddy MacKay

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Governor Ron DeSantis issued the following memorandum:

On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, surrounded by his family, former Governor Buddy MacKay passed away at the age of 91. Former Governor MacKay served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He began his over thirty-year career in public service to the State of Florida in 1968 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He then served for three terms in the Florida Senate and three terms in the United States House of Representatives. Before serving as the Governor of Florida, MacKay was the Lieutenant Governor of Florida for two terms beginning in 1991.

Former Governor MacKay exemplified dedication to public service and improving the State of Florida. As a mark of respect for former Governor MacKay, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida until sunset on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

  • The governor’s kind and generous words about McKay are appreciated by me and is the type of respectful and non-partisan communications we need more of in America and Florida. I also note the governor’s offer of help and support to California, which is dealing with the Los Angeles fires. It is in sharp contrast to the president elects rude, partisan, and personal attacks on California which follows his similar attempts to weaponize the hurricane damage to North Carolina. Maybe the tone of the Carter memorial he attended, as well as the example Carter set for character will positively affect him going forward and we might actually work together on America’s problems.

    • Echo your comments. I thought flags were already at 1/2 staff in remembrance of former President Carter though.

Trump, affected positively? Not gonna happen.

I’m still trying to figure out who was the best actor during the memorial service, Trump or those he interacted with.
