Flags to be flown at half-staff on Feb. 14 in honor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas Remembrance Day

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On February 13, Governor Ron DeSantis released the following memo:

On February 14, 2018, the 17 innocent lives of Alyssa Alhadeff, Scott Beigel, Martin Duque Anguiano, Nicholas Dworet, Aaron Feis, Jaime Guttenberg, Christopher Hixon, Luke Hoyer, Cara Loughran, Gina Montalto, Joaquin Oliver, Alaina Petty, Meadow Pollack, Helena Ramsay, Alex Schachter, Carmen Schentrup, and Peter Wang were taken when a murderer opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Students, teachers, and faculty showed great courage in the face of danger. The sacrifices of these heroes, as well as the brave actions of first responders, will never be forgotten.

In memory of these lives lost, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida from sunrise to sunset on Friday, February 14, 2025.

  • Great, now do something besides offering prayers to help control our out of control gun problem.

    • Jazzy, it’s a criminal problem, not an inanimate object problem. When you FINALLY address the ACTUAL cause of the violence, instead of blaming inanimate objects, THEN you will reduce shootings. I’ll bet $20 that you don’t blame the cars for drunk driving fatalities.

      • Then please explain how the following facts are all true and yet you think guns are not the problem:

        1. The US leads the developed world in guns – by a long shot!

        2. The US leads the developed world in incarceration of it’s citizens – by a long shot.

        3. The US leads the developed world in gun deaths, which are also the leading cause of death among our kids – by a long shot.

PS I blame the existence of cars for automobile deaths but we mostly all agree that the increased mobility is worth it. I blame the ridiculous number of guns – by the laws of supply and demand, this makes them cheaper on the street – for our excessive number of kids dying and gun deaths. We get nothing in return that a tighter national system of sales and banning of high-velocity firing military weapons would not also yield.
